Question Syncing personnel address book wirelessly in Domino

Please Login to Remove!

Is it possible to sync the address book wirelessly if the names.nsf is stored locally on their PC rather than the Domino server? I found a KB article (KB04521) on how to do it, but it seems like the names.nsf has to be on the Domino server. Could I set up the client to replicate back to the BES?

Hi

Here's the way I have it working for us:

Each users personal address book has a replica created on the server in a folder PAB, purely for convenience, called the same as the mail file. So Michael Mouse will have his mail file mail\mmouse.nsf and his personal address book as PAB\mmouse.nsf. When you create the replica on the server from the desktop just rename it as needed. Replication is scheduled on his desktop/laptop for every 15 minutes.

The users BES PIM sync entry is then edited as necessary. The same can also be done for a personal Journal file which will sync with the MemoPad application on the BB.

You may need to add the user to a group with sufficient ACL to actually create the replica but once it is created they can be removed from the group. I add them to the group the night before i am commissioning the BB and then briefly connect to their PC to create the replica.

i have it working without the names.nsf file being on the domino server.

under user group>
PIM Sync. >Address Book (mine is set to TRUE, Bidirectional, Server Wins)

Apply to template and resend the policy to all users.

The mail and bes server both have access (within ACL) to the mailfile.

That might help.

why not storing the addresses in the mail file ? use the iNotes functions - works without any problems...

Ours is a follow on from trying an alternative solution to the BB for push email which required the PAB on the server. Going forwards we may well use the iNotes address book.

Well unfortunately I am not the Domino admin. Currently roaming profiles is turned off, so most of the mail data is stored locally on the PC. It has been like this for some time. I think I can get replication going for the 26 people I have. Thanks guys.

Replication is working. I am doing it just like you are, David. It is working great. I originally was going to have it sent up to the BES rather than the main mail server, but that caused a bunch of fail over messages. It is apparently a bug and the messages really don't mean anything. But they happened far to frequently for me to leave it.

Thanks for all your help guys.

We actually disable wireless address book synchronization. From playing around the best option is the iNotes address book.

We just tell our people to use the "actions -> synchronize address book" function in Notes, which syncs their local address book into their mailfile, which is picked up by the BES and transferred to the device's local address book. Works like a charm.

Don't seem to have that option in 6.5.5. We are going to switch over to roaming profiles when we upgrade to 8 next year. The replication method will work ok till then.

Sorry, I thought it was there in 6.5.x. You have to be in your inbox view for it to show on the menu. We're on 7.0.x now so I don't have one I can check. :(

I see it now. Do I need to change anything on the BES for it to see it? My test subjects are not syncing with this method. This could make for an even quicker fix if I can get it working.

I have a similar issue.

A user can create an entry in their Personal NAB, replicate and it doesn't appear on the handheld, even though sync is enabled and configured correctly. If you check the usage information of the server replic of hte personal addressbook, it apears that the last time the BES polled this database was a week ago.

Just point the PIM synch, Address book section at the users mail file. Should be all that is needed.

That requires the user to manually sync contacts doesn't it. We use roaming profiles.

Edited to say it works on some, but not others.

Great! BTW it works both ways, so if you add a contact on the BB just sync again and it's imported to your Notes PAB.
