It should pick up the GSM & EDGE. No 3G! We have yet to see what locks Verizon has put on the phone.

Also getting unlock codes for the 9530 might be a pain just like the 8830.

No, the US GSM frequencies are disabled in the Verizon Storm. At least, that's what I've been told.

well, that would make sense that they would disable the frequencies for the u.s...but Friday i have friends buying the verizon storm, i will try it at the place i work that night...and see what kind of signal it gets....this whole no 3g thing is a BIG issue....but i guess there is no way around that....you guys think there is a sim card slot in the verizon phone for overseas use?

I also just checked Verizon's Storm site and it still shows the North American frequencies as available unlike the 8830 which states they are not available.

John,

I've had multiple visits by my Verizon and RIM corp reps (some covered under NDA's). I attened a Verizon health care and life science event in Atlantic City Nov 5&6, and I just attended a VZW Storm launch at Lincoln Financial field tonight where we had an hour long "work shop" of hands on time... My VZW rep was in the office Tuesday with hers for me to play with.

Each meeting, Verizon and RIM say its Quad Band GSM, unlike the 8830.

So I tend to think it will support US GSM frequencies as well as Europe's.

The only question they haven't been willing to give a definate answer on is... Will it be sim unlocked out of the box, or will they provide the unlock code.

We will know in a few days, I suppose. Right now there are major issues unlocking the Storm. I doubt they will be unlocked out of the box.

My source is Quad band GSM, SIM Locked, Codes are going to be hard to get. They want you to use the Verizon SIM.

Do you mean.. if you have this phone, Verizon service, and are using the included Vodaphone SIM... if Verizon doesn't have CDMA coverage, yet there is AT&T GSM coverage.. will this device work?

I doubt it...

I don't think the Vodaphone SIM its meant to roam on USA GSM carriers when there isn't VZW CDMA coverage...

I think the Vodaphone SIM is meant for use when roaming outside the USA... so like South American countries that don't have CDMA coverage, yet use the same two GSM frequencies used by north american carriers, and where Vodaphone has service or a roaming agreement with the local carrier.

Mark, I think you're getting everyone else confused with your reference to "Vodafone" SIM...

The long and short of this is that AT&T / T-Mobile SIM users may have a longer time to wait, if at all, before they can realize using a VZW Storm 9530 in the U.S. or overseas... From what I understand, VZW will provide GSM SIM cards for international roaming, charging the traveling user, obviously, international roaming rate$$$...

As per BGR, GSM is not locked on the VZ Storm.

Q: Is the GPS locked down like typical Verizon BlackBerrys?

A: Kind ofxxx8230; The Verizon Stormxxx8217;s A-GPS is locked to Verizon (the tech that speeds up getting a GPS fix by using the cellular network to triangulate your approximate position) but the actual GPS chip is not. That means youxxx8217;re free to use any BlackBerry GPS application your hearts desire without any worry of Big Red crippling your dreams.

Actually, I saw talzawd last post (that I quoted), and was responding to and missed the first so I didn't factor that OP in... (I thought it was if I have a VZW Storm, with VZW service and put an AT&T sim in it, will I get coverage where AT&T has service, but Verizon doesn't.)

If I put the first together with the one I quoted... then I see talzawd's intent really appears to be using an AT&T SIM in the VZW Storm (without VZW service) and getting coverage from AT&T...

So, yes, my response doesn't apply to that situation, and doesn't make sense... Sorry.
