Do you get this message after you connect to an SSH server?

Yes. Once i connect and type the "screen" command is when I get that.

I ran a program on my Debian box under screen so that I could connect to it from the bb and track the progress, but when i type "screen -r *screen number*" i get that message. I read around online and everything I saw was talking about using different users when they got the message, but I am using the same user on both the box and on the bb.

Hmm, I've never used screen, but I'd assume that you're running into a problem that the terminal type reported by MidpSSH to your shell is not one recognized. I think MidpSSH has some options somewhere for changing the terminal type, but if that doesn't work, you might be able to use something like "set term=vt100" then type your "screen -r *screen number*" command.

Im using 1.7.3. go to settings - network - terminal type is the 3rd option. there is nothing to choose from but you can type vt100 and that fixed it on mine.

ah! thanks. i have to say, as great it is to have a working SSH client available, it's got the worst user interface of any software i've used in the last 10 years

It is a little yuck. After you get to the shell prompt, try hitting the menu button and choosing "Type". That lets you input directly to the command line and makes a big difference for useability.
