Default Considering switching to IMAP - some questions

Please Login to Remove!

Now the Google Mail quota is getting seriously high, I'm considering switching to Google mail.

I very rarely delete emails, either received and sent, which is why I've always stuck with POP3 until now. However, I do have some questions...

How does the Blackberry (I've an 8320) handle IMAP folders? For instance, if I receive an email that on my PC will be sorted into a folder automatically, does this folder get used at all on the BB? Also, I take it if you mark a mail as read on the BB, this will mark as read on the server?

Thanks,
Ed Ludlow

You will still get only the inbox. The blackberry with BIS doesn't offer folder support.

About the only advantage for gmail on imap versus pop for a blackberry is limited read/unread support, but that's about it.

OK thanks. I kind of get the impression from your message you wouldn't switch to imap - would that be fair to say?

What do others think?

As far as I know there is a speed advantage with IMAP.

BIS gets mails from the POP Server every 15 minutes. With IMAP it's nearly realtime, but this depends on your mail provider. I heard that with GoogleMail it's nearly realtime.

Additionally I heard that in future BIS releases folder support will be offered.

Really? That's interesting about the 15 minute thing - my BB gets mail realtime, is this a Yahoo (my main account provider) thing?

Maybe this is a BIS thing. As far as I know pulls Vodafone POP mail every 15 minutes.

Yahoo mail is realtime. It's a special deal with RIM.

Brilliant, think I'll stick with BT and POP then.

Google is realtime too. I use pop, not imap to get gmail on my blackberry.

I find it more reliable. I had tried imap (with gmail) and every now and then emails would never even show up on my phone. With pop, they always get to my phone.

You guys have it backwards. With Gmail IMAP it's 15 minutes with BIS and instant with POP. When freshly activated IMAP will be instant too, but after X amount of time it reverts to 15 minutes and nobody knows why. Shame. Probably won't be fixed until July 2009 when they roll out BIS 2.7 which includes better Gmail support.

I use Google Apps with IMAP enabled and it is instant my on BB. When I delete from my BB, it pretty much deletes instantly from my Google Apps/GMail. But, when I delete from my Google Apps, it seems to never delete from my BB or simply takes forever.

Just my observation.

My Comcast POP is every 15 minutes and Gmail IMAP is instant.

It all comes down to whether or not the email server is IMAP-idle compliant. Some providers are, some are not.

Many are stating that they having issues with Gmail for some reason or another...saying that "it has reverted to 15 minutes". If so, just delete + readd the account.

People on IMAP have a few advantage.
1) Inbox Sync (Deletion if you wish as well)
2) Sent mail sync (if you send an email, it will show up in the Sent mail folder if the server is setup properly.
3) Instant email - if your server is IDLE compliant. (good way to test is to add and see if it comes up instant...-or email your administrator)

Hope that helps!
