What about 1xEV = 3G don't you understand?

Whereas the Storm support Network Technologies of GFM/UMTS, 1xDV, and "Global", the recommended setting is 1xEV (G3).
how does "1XEV = 3G"? i dont get that comment. even the Storm manual shows that 3G is a step above 1XEV, the difference between that on a 3G connection you can pretty much do everything at the same time (phone, email, browser, sms, mms etc.) while on 1XEV you can not.

I don't think you understand what 3G is.

It's not a specific technology. 3G is a moniker given to a group of wireless technologies which fit into a general class.

1XEV (EV-DO) is a 3G wireless technology. Used by Verizon Wireless and Sprint in the US.
HSPDA is a 3G wireless technology. Used by AT&T Wireless in the US.

It doesn't make sense to say 3G is a "step above" EVDO, no matter that the Storm manual may say. It's just marketing babble.

Issue with CDMA 3G technology. I recently read something about this that there were two 3G type standards, one was EV-DO and the other EV-DV I think. The one,EV-DV, allowed both data and voice but was more costly and not backwards compatible, so the went with EVDO, which is one at a time. If this is incorrect, feel free to correct me. This is a bummer, that is one of the nice things about GSM 3G, you can do both at the same time and do them well

Simply, because EV-DO doesn't support simultaneous voice and data.

There seems to be this assumption that simultaneous voice and data is some "feature" of all 3G
wireless networks. It isn't. 3G doesn't dictate a specification. Again, it's just a general name given to a group of next generation wireless networks. There's no 3G standard.

First, let me say, I am becoming a fan of yours Soup (if I may call you Soup).

Second, the best approach I have used to get others to understand the meaning of 3G... is to explain that it refers to a family of technology in the same way as "wifi". While this is not a literal, one-to-one, it helps others grasp the "family of standards/technology" under a single name.
