UMA is carrier specific as it depends if they have a link in with your ISP. It's also dependent upon what device you have as well. I'm on a Bold (BB 9000) and have to wait until there is a OS update to solve the issue with the 3G radio signal and the Wi-fi.. doh!
hope this helps with some of the questions here..

Point 4 is fixable but not easy (depending on your carrier). The major issue is with point 3 (changing vendor id to your carrier) and the hack that has been impossible by end users to this point. If the firmware was easily defeated, Blackberries would lose their reputation. There is a reason that the Blackberry is an industrial strength business machine trusted by most governments.

Thanks for the information about UMA and the 8900
I think it helps alot! I am a Rogers customer in Edmonton, AB and just got my 8900. My home router connected perfectly and UMA shows on the phone. I shut off my EDGE radio and I still am connected fine - all data and voice work thru UMA/Router.
I travel to Las Vegas several times a year and usually just get a burner phone ( NET-10 $30 for 300 USA nationwide minutes) for the two weeks that I stay each time. But I like to have my data and email too. Having read your post, please answer the following for me:
Can I bring my 8900 to Las Vegas, Turn off the EDGE radio, and as long as I am able to be in a wifi place, make phone calls locally? back to Edmonon?
I DO NOT have Talkspot, but would consider it if this is an option.
snip
Hope this helps,

Is T-Mo's HotSpot the Roger's Talkspot equivalent?

Cory Scheuer - that is true. I was speaking with a RIM rep only yesterday here in the UK and I'm awaiting an OS update to solve the issues with 3G and UMA so it will be able to work on my 9000 handset.

If you get it, please share. I was told that it's up to the carrier to request it but Rogers will not be providing it for the Bold. I'd like to see if it is possible (and is in the software). At the present time, it is not.
It is technically possible because Orange has 3G and UMA now. it's just not possible on released Blackberries at this time.

Sure it is - the SE 705u, Samsung P270 and there is an LG handset all have UMA and 3G.

Yes it is possible it's a problem on the early BB bolds by all accounts and it IS carrier based. - just have to wait and see what time the update is released.

It doesn't appear to be able to be enabled without being able to change your devices vendor id.

It's my amateur opinion that instead of, or in addition to vendor id, the proper UMA/GAN Security Gateway (SEGW) and UNC/GAN Controller (GANC) need to be set.
I've been tinkering with my eval unit and can change those values, but I don't have the UMA section in WiFi Diagnostics. I figure that could be an issue with service books, or even the vendor id.

That's correct. UMA is restricted to each individual carrier's device and there's nothing any of us can do about it. It's what is deterring me from getting an unlocked Javelin.

The normal Blackberry software for these phones have the SEGW and UNC addresses tied to vendor ID. If you have them set correctly for T-Mobile (I assume) on the eval unit than you need to check you have the correct certificate. I assume you can turn UMA/GAN off and on with that unit as well. Maybe it's not on? If you have it enabled, you should see the Wi-fi diagnostic section.

Yes, I have the SEGW and UNC addresses set correctly for T-MO (psgw.t-mobilesgws.com and punc.t-mobileuncs.com).
I am also able to turn UMA/GAN on and off, but when I go through a routine that has worked 3 times now, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I've almost cried when UMA shows up for about 5 seconds and disappears again. (It hasn't lasted any longer.)
I can't tell if it's a WiFi problem or some other handoff problem, but either way, with UMA "working," the UMA Section in WiFi Diagnostics still isn't there, but the Services Status shows "Mobile Voice: Connection: UMA"
What's interesting is that when I set some settings on the eval unit, some are saved, and some aren't. The addresses are saved in GAN Control, but the 3GPP_GAN/GAN Preference in the Radio Control Engineering Screen are reset every once in a while.

Well, apparently, you don't need to hack a Government Blackberry - they sell them off used, with all the info right on 'em !!
