i'm surely not the first to think of this yet it has not been developed.

it's simple, give the program your list of numbers in your contact list that you'd never want to call during after hours. then customize hours, days of the week, etc. even add a block breaker that makes you answer critical thinking questions or long math to enable calling.

What if you had a genuine emergency on your hands... and you're drunk too?

While I won't lecture someone else about the merits of calling friends while drunk, it seems that an application won't stop them, neither would taking the phone away (they can borrow one or use a pay phone).

It's like the recent post regarding removing the browser to prevent surfing for pr0n. It won't prevent anything, it'd only make it slightly more difficult.

In both cases, there is a deeper underlying problem -- and it's not phone related.

911 would be the first number I'd disable via such an application to prevent "accidental" calls that would get me in a heap of trouble (more so than angry calls the next day from friends).

But perhaps my line of thinking just isn't in tune with such an application, since I can't picture myself calling up friends while juiced.

So, I guess I can see the need for such an app. I think.

There's always 411 as well. IIRC they'll even connect you on most carriers.

I agree that the concept does speak to a much larger personal issue.
Having said that, I also think that when used properly, such an app could address the eternal issue of "b.utt dialing"- a useful tool regardless of one's state of sobriety.

Maybe someone could make a program that allows you to lock the keyboard for a certain amount of time. I know there is a way to lock the keyboard anyway, but have something that makes it so you can only accept calls for the certain amount of time you'd like it set to.

I don't know if that even makes sense, but I see where everyone is coming from on this.

WHY on earth whould you EVER disable 911, that is absolutly the WORST idea i have EVER heard... and trust me, i have heard of some pretty bad ones... do you have a history of calling 911 drunk?



with that said, this application would be a great idea... another good application (continuing with the drunk theme) would be one that reads your BAC... but, i think that may be impossible... awesome, but impossible

No, as per my post that you quoted from.

If the user has an emergency, they will still be able to call 911, plain and simple. If they are four sheets to the wind, and they can't handle unlocking the application, then likely they also will be incoherent to the 911 operator. Maybe cell tower triangulation would be useful at least.

Initially, I didn't think much of this application; but I can see it's merits. However, I would still lock out 911, worst idea ever or not.

My solution to this problem is unlikely to be popular.

However, if one MUST drink to excess, perhaps the best thing one can do is surrender his phone along with his keys to the DD.
