Issue with SMS Inbox

Afternoon
I seem to be having an issue with my new 8220 when it comes to viewing SMS messages. Basically as soon as I recieve a new text I open the inbox folder to find it empty of all messages bar the "Welcome to Blackberry" SMS sent when I first got the phone. To get into my inbox and view new messages I have to go through the options to "View Folder" and then select SMS Inbox. This is getting to be slightly tiresome, especially given the fact its happening every single time a new SMS comes through. I have done the usual stuff like took the battery out and tried looking through the options to no avail. In addition I also can't see any of my old messages without doing a similar routine.
Anyone got any tips?
