Default Multiple migrations, what order should I perform?

Please Login to Remove!

I need to do the following:

-Upgrade from BES 4.1.3 to 4.1.6 (not interested in trying 5.0 just yet)
-Migrate BES to new hardware in different data center
-Move from MSDE to SQL.

A few months ago, I attempted this by following the MSDE to SQL conversion and knife-edge cutover documentation.

The MSDE to SQL seemed to work okay, after a call to RIM to straighten out the computer names (osql commands didn't quite get it done).

The new BES ran okay (still under 4.1.3) but would not stay connected with RIM infrastructure (got 5-in-1 SRP lockout, where your SRP connects to RIM 5 times in one minute). Extensive troubleshooting with RIM could not resolve. I was outside of my outage window and had to rollback before trying to upgrade to 4.1.6.

RIM blamed our infrastructure but another test BES in the same new data center will stay connected.

So. I need to get this done. Should I try the 4.1.6 upgrade FIRST on the old box, and then migrate? That would have to be done on the current box which doesn't give me any back out.

Or should I do a knife-edge using MSDE to the new box, and then migrate to SQL and then upgrade to 4.1.6?

My preference in your case would be knife edge MSDE to the new hardware and stay with 4.1.3. This will give you a backup of the old box in case anything goes wrong.wait a few days to make sure all is ok

The upgrade to 4.1.6 and MR5. wait a few days

Then do MSDE to SQL again, if it fails the you still have the old DB on it ready to take over.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll update after I get this done...
