Default which BES for our company

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

i'm reinstalling BES onto a server 2003 DC, as we've just moved up to exchange 2007 sp2.
Now, for all intents and purposes its gonna be a brand new install of 4.1.2, then upgraded to 4.1.6.
Thing is do i need the MDS services, i don't really know what they are, they were just installed originally by someone else with little experience.
We have a total of 10 devices and all they are used for is email and calender, contact synchronsing. (not sure what else they'd be used for anyway).
I've read that the install "...with MDS services" is really heavy and not needed by most organisations.
Can someone help me with this decision please?
Also....a lot of people have issues with mapi32.dll and cdo.dll files. I downloaded the v1.2.1 pack, should i install it on the bes server AND exchange server 2007 prior to installing BES 4.1.6?
I've read up on the sticky on how to install with EX2007 however there are plenty of users for whom it doesn't work properly.
I'm running out of time to get this done, so any help is most appreciated.
Thanks

If you download a trial of BES 4.1, then you can have it be at SP6 and just use your SRP info with it.
download it here.
https://www.blackberry.com/eBES/trialOrder.do?id=15

CDO 1.2.1 is used on the BES to match the CDO version that Exchange uses.
Dont install it on exchange.

If you have no apps on BES the dont worry about MDS and dont choose that option.

Thanks for the info knottyrope.
I've just uninstalled BES from my DC and rebooted. I will now reinstall 4.1.2 then the upgrade to 4.1.6.
However, i'd already installed the CDO 1.2.1 previously and when trying to upgrade to 4.1.6 it flagged it on the install as "cannot find Exchange server, may need to install MAPI" or something like that.
That's why i uninstalled it all....but, whats to stop it happening again?
Shall i re-install the CDO 1.2.1 again before BES....again?

Thanks

ok....
just reinstalled ExchangeMapiCdo.MSI successfully (so it says).
Then started the install of BES 4.1.2 and on the starting checklist it says:
WARNING: Exchange Server is not detected. A newer version of mapi32.dll may need to be installed.
Its so irritating and i'm not the only one who has this issue. Sorry for sounding angry....but i am,
All info on the web says to install cdo 1.2.1, yet BES says its not installed.
If it needs updating to that of Exchange 2007, where and how do i do that?

Thanks again for any help offered. Wish i wasn't at work on a sunday.

edit: (from blackberry support)
Procedure
To download and install the MAPI Client, complete the following steps:

Go to the Microsoft Download web site and search for Article MSKB945835.
Download the ExchangeMapiCdo.EXE file, not the ExchangeMapiCdo.MSI file.
When prompted to run or save the file, click Run to save the ExchangeMapiCdo folder to a location of your choice.
Open the folder and click the ExchangeMapiCdo.MSI file to apply all the CDO and MAPI files needed.

Thats exactly what i did. although it only extracts the one file anyway which is ExchangeMapiCdo.MSI file, the one they say not to download. Where's the sense in that?!?

have you installed the " ExchangeMapiCdo.MSI " by opening it ?
If I remember correct, the exe contains the msi file, but it still must be installed afterwards.

yup, when you open the .exe it creates a folder with just the .msi file in. I double clicked that and it very briefly goes through a wizard and says installed successfully.

Makes you wonder why people bother with blackberry sometimes, when windows mobile devices do the same job with much less hassle and cost.

you made a reboot after the mapi & cdo install ?
Have searched in all paths for other mapi32.dlls ?
anyway, I would continue the BES installation and fix the problem later, if it still exists.

Ok, i didn't reboot AFTER the mapi and cdo install, just went straight into bes install which i would have thought would be ok. I have continued the install and now get the issue of
"The name could not be resolved. Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer. Contact your system administrator if this condition persists."
And am desparately looking for a resolve for that too.

Search for all occurrences of the mapi32.dll on the disk and, check the versions.

Check, if your DNS is working correct on the PC where you installed the BES:
open a command prompt,
execute nslookup
if your DCs name is "server.domain.com", try, if "server" resolves to the correct IP Adress, try, if the IP-Address resolves to the FQDN "server.domain.com"

download the windows support tools on the BES server and let dcdiag check your Domain controllers.

since there was a problem during the install with mapi,
did the installation did ask for the name of the exchange server ?
if you can complete the installation,
is the "mail" icon present in the control panel, and, can you create a mapi profile ?
