Install the newest desktop manager on your computer. DM now has a modem module.

Do you mean Device Manager or Desktop Manager? I have both, but don't see this. Where is the DM modem module? I'm running Desktop Manager v5.0.1.28 (Nov 2009) but I don't see what the help files says about IP Modem?

Desktop manager. The modem feature is there with backup/restore, synchronization, application loader and so forth. Not sure why it wouldn't be there. It doesn't require any selection during installation.
A thought is to run the installer again and select repair. Or delete, and then reinstall.

What version are you using? I just downloaded the latest (?) 5.0.1.28. For the life of me I can't see what you can see...

Same version. The IP Modem module is on the bottom right, where you have an empty space. Don't know what could have happened in your case.
Did you select the personal email option during install, and select the typical installation option?

I was wondering about that. Especially now that DM asks you to connect the device before continuing when first launching after it is installed. ... So that's the answer.

Man, I love this website. Thanks! It worked! But now how to connect? I get an error. It connects and authenticates, then I get the error imaged below. I'll play with it some. The DM help didn't seem to help much. Don't know if AT&T even allows it. I am on a data plan and BIS.

Have you ensured you can communicate with your Bb modem? With the BDM running, go to Control Panel > Phone and Modem... > Select modem (generally on Com 6, 7 or 8) > Diagnostics > Query modem. It should return Blackberry strings.
I know BDM does not care, but you should nevertheless add the initialization string in the advanced tab (same modem popup above) and add this value to the empty field.
+cgdcont=1,"IP","ISP.CINGULAR"
Then run the dial up setting (as if you are using a dial up connection) that is created by BDM (will be named something with AT...) or the profile name you chose. Keep BDM running when you do this.
If all else fails, download AT&T communications manager and give that a shot. Or Tetherberry.

BTW, I have noticed that certain accounts that do not have the MediaNet pay per use package provisioned get this error. The safest bet is to get the tethering add-on for $15. It (legally) allows you to do modem tethering for up to 5GB per month.

I am trying to use my 9700 as a tethered modem with my macbook pro. I have tried connecting using bluetooth but i can;t seem to get past the pairing stage properly, because the security code refuses to pop-up on the 9700, this seem to be the problem. Does anyone know what to do? I'd be very glad if i can get some detailed instructions to follow. Thanks.

If you are still looking to tether your BlackBerry, this should help: SLB: Using the Blackberry 8800 as an USB Tethered Modem. The method detailed in this blog entry works flawlessly with both my 8310 and my 9700 (both are with at&t). To be honest, I hadn't yet discovered the ability to tether straight from the DM.

If you're on AT&T - try editing that same file and change isp.cingular to wap.cingular - this should fix that problem and alloow you to connect.
