Default Which OS should I upgrade to?

Please Login to Remove!

Just bought an 8900 today, came with 4.6.1.114 installed out of the box. Upgrading to the latest OS is usually the first thing I do, but there seems to be a lot of negative chatter about OS 5.x in general.

So, which OS is the crowd favorite? Do the benefits of an OS 5.x build outweigh the shortcomings?

Edit: On T-Mobile. Latest offered through official channels is 4.6.1.231, but I've heard 5.x is loadable if you want it.

5.0.X is loadable.

i recommend it; i have almost nothing negative to say about it at all (save fort a few small things.. but they are far worth the upgrades over 4.6)

I just upgraded to the newest one for the 8900 and I have had no problems with it at all. Worth upgrading.

Alright, up and running 5.0.0.461!

No problems - SMS threads seem to work just fine, call quality is normal (both UMA and EDGE). Had to call TMo to activate visual voicemail, they did it with a smile. You guys were right, the features of 5.0 are fantastic!

But damn, the password-only keyboard lock is annoying. Seriously? I lock my phone every time it goes in my pocket. Why not leave the option of a simple keystroke or dedicated button for unlocking? I would MUCH rather have the occasional pocket-dial than enter a password each time I want to do anything.

No one has found a way around this?

Default alternative to keyboard lock on 5.0.0.461

Minimum password is four characters.

The other option you can use when pocketing your phone is to put it in standby mode. This can be done by holding the A key (if you use keyboard shortcuts in lieu of dial from home screen) or by holding down the mute shoulder button on the top.

Waking up the phone from standby is done by pressing the mute shoulder button again.

Perfect! Standby mode works like a charm. Disabled password, no nagging password on resume. Also, keystrokes won't pull the phone out of standby mode before the screen dims, like it did on the 8100.

Thanks a million
