Hi. I am on holiday in Tenerife soon and would like to take my Blackberry with me and so many people are saying don't as I will receive a massive bill when I return. I am with Orange. Any advice would be great. Thanks

you can check with the carrier but most have very high charges for data and voice use outside of their area. Your bill could be in the hundreds if not.

sounds like your friends gave you good advice.

Some carriers offer international data roaming packages that will add to your monthly bill but limit your bill to just that monthly fee. $60/month is about what US carriers charge, but they're eliminating this option one by one. Check with Orange to see what they offer, and find out their terms. Sometimes they have a minimum # of months you have to keep the international roaming option active.

Carriers outside of the US do not have these types of plans... It is really only US carriers that have packages like this.

Yeesh! With no data roaming plan I'd recommend taking a dumb phone for calls and a laptop for email over WiFi. Your BlackBerry would be nice to use but it may just be too expensive. For the cost of your data on BlackBerry while on holiday you might be able to buy an iPad. iPads are good for email over WiFi.

Hi barmby123, if you are staying in Tenerife then you can connect your blackberry to WiFi Mundo (see wifimundo.com). If you pay premium access (25euros for a week) which might suit you better than the free access if you expect to move any amount of data.

And by the way, it's HOT right now on the island, so bring the sunscreen!

Sprint just dumped their international data plan effective Sunday 7-11-2010. Fail.
