Custom text sounds do NOT work for select contacts (my fiancee)

A phone tune is custom and works fine

Emails from her work fine and are custom

But text messages always play the current theme picked (so if silent is on, I get no alert)

I wiped the device and restored only phonebooks, texts, web, etc (no device settings data from 9700) but this didn't help the problem.

Its possible (or probable) the Torch does NOT have the same sounds your old BB used to have, unless you had your own ringtones or voice notes.

You will probably have to reassign a new sound to her contact so it plays a sound thats located on the Torch.

All my custom sounds stayed when I transfered devices becasue I have custom ring tones stored on my Micro SD memory card.

Hope this helps.

I do have a sound picked on the phone...

Cause that sound plays for 'emails' - just not texts

I even tried other people - texts just do not work

I don't get it!

Have you tried taking the hyphens out of the phone numbers?

Look at your fiancés phone number, the one used to send a text. Delete any punctuation it may have and be sure to save. Does the custom tone now work for the text?

That worked! Go figure, the punctuation would cause that!

From my husband:
Here is why I think the removal of all punctuation from phone numbers works to make your ringtones function correctly.

A far as the phone system is concerned, phone numbers consist of (you guessed it) only numbers. Punctuation is only for human convenience to aid in remembering these numbers. Back when telephones were a new concept, a lot of attention and study went into this. It was found that the 3 + 4 digit numbering was very easy to remeber. With areas codes, it became 3 + 3 + 4. Great for humans but computers are unencumbered by this need.

When manually dialing a number, you never enter punctuation, only numbers. When you dial by selecting a contact from your address book, the punctuation is skipped and only numbers are transmitted. In effect, your Blackberry trims out everything but the numerals.

When you receive a call, and caller ID is active, only numbers are provided. These numbers are used to compare against the numbers in your contact list. If the number does not match anyone in your list, the default ringtone is used.

Unfortunately, it appears RIM's programming of this process does not include trimming out punctuation in the contact list prior to the comparison. If the comparison does not result in a perfect match of any number, then you have no match.
