The lawfirm I work for offers to pay for blackberry data service if I buy my own blackberry. This is tempting.

And yet, I find in the firm literature this statement: "The ability to install third-party applications on the firm-supported blackberry devices is disabled."

Has anyone heard of a scenario like this? Should I believe it?

That would enabled on their end from the policy settings in BES. We use it as well on ours. We push out the software packages our users need and lock it down from installing new unsupported apps. After all, we [work] are paying for the data plan ;)

On whose end? What is to stop me from going and and turning the setting back on?

Once you install policies, you can change them, but you can't remove them unless you send it back to RIM.

You would have to have access to your companies BES server to adjust the policies

Please search, you will find many threads, and quite a few stickeys regarding IM software for the blackberry. Try the aftermarket software forum to start and that should get you going on the right track

Sounds like your working for a bunch of tightwads. A law firm that can't afford to buy their employees Blackerries - it boggles the mind!

Secondly, they want you to have a Blackberry so they can get a hold of you 24/7 and grind as much work out of you as possible! If you want a Blackberry, my advice is buy you own and don't give these cheapskates the number.

Do you know what the error message to the end user would be if they tried to install an unsupported third party application? Is it clear to them they are being blocked by their corporate BES administrator?
