How Do You Stop SPAM??
Please Login to Remove!
I need help trying to stop SPAM from getting to my BB. I am using the Cingular BIS (which has not been updated). Besides the filters (which suck) how do you set your SPAM control?

In the first place I never ever have any mail comedirectly to my handheld address other than forwarding to it from gmail, now I forward all my mail addys to gmail and using its great spam filters, plus a couple of filters I have set up for rules as to what to forward, I never ever get one piece of spam to my BB. This to me is the cleanest and fastest way to deal with SPAM.

Wirelessly posted (Cingular-Blue 7290: BlackBerry7290/4.0.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)
The point is, never give out your username@carrier.blackberry.net email address, use a third party alternate email address like gmail or your ISP. Forward those accounts to the BB addy. This way if you get overwhelmed with SPAM, you could change the alternate addresses easier than the blackberry one. But then, gmail's filters can prevent that hassle.

I have not yet figured out a method to tell Gmail "forward anything that comes from anyone in the contact list, otherwise do not forward."
Any ideas?

i use gmail and i still get spam. it has been reduced, but i still get it. can someone perhaps post the special rules and keywords that they use in the gmail filters to help reduce the spam. that would help a lot of ppl.
the first two years i had my bb, i did not get any spam. (none of it is addressed to my bb directly)

My rule has to do with what email I have it forward to the BB, and that is only mail that is important to me, so for the most part it has my office's domain, or specific family names or friends that I want to allow in, the rest stay at gmail. If any is spam (very little) I right away identify as spam and delete it. So consequently my BB gets no spam at all.

You need to be sure to go into gmail occasionally and check off the spam and "mark as spam". Gmail "learns" and gets better and better. I have no filters or rules regarding who can get thru, anyone can get thru ( I have to do this for business, you never know when a new customer will e-mail for the first time). I just use the spam blocker and I get only a few a week. I consider that very little spam.

the first 2 years i had my BB, i got no spam at all. a friend of mine decided to put my office email on one of his forwarding lists for funny stuff and BOOM, spam started coming left and right. now filters are the only thing that help me.

I know you mentioned the BIS filters don't work...but i've got mine set up to "do not forward" unless it was sent directly to my BIS or GMail or Yahoo accounts and i don't get any Spam on thet handheld
Yes it means the emails do go to your BIS inbox (unless you have 2.0) but the auto-aging rules clear it out (i've got mine set to 1 day)

Yeah like many others have suggested, I would not recommend giving out the primary handheld address.
I don't even give it out to personal contacts.
