I've seen a couple of threads that ramble on about e-mail forwarding (usually involving gmail) and network speed, but I thought I'd ask a point blank question:

For those of you using BIS, (1) do you forward your e-mail to a blackberry account or do you poll your pop account, and (2) why do you do it that way?

From what I see, the pros of forwarding are that the messages arrive far faster (up to 15 minutes difference). Con is that you can't pick which account to send from so you can't differentiate yourself (name, e-mail, signature) for recipients. Polling would allow you to "look" different for e-mails from each account, but it is a lot slower.

Am I missing anything?

Nope. You answered your own questions.

...and, of course, I realized that if you poll you need to make sure that your desktop/laptop doesn't pull the messages off your server or you might not receive anything on the blackberry!

I use gmail forwarding and have my "reply to" address as , so on a simple header my BB sent messages look like they are coming from gmail. I only use gmail so I don't have the double email address problem. But otherwise it looks like you have it all layed out above.

Depending on your email service, another con with mail forwarding is the spam. Before Verizon wireless upgraded to BIS 2.0, I would forward my yahoo mail directly to my BB. But since, yahoo does not filter emails before they are forwarded I would get alot of spam.

I know some other email providers will filter spam before forwarding a copy to another email address.

I'm trying to figure out a good workaround for a couple of my e-mail accounts that I would prefer to poll. if I have outlook leave the messages on the server I can have the BB pull them, but then eventually I'll fill up the server space. Any ideas?

By the way, nice Bednarik photo... already looking forward to the Eagles' season?

Responding in order of importance:
1. It is always Eagles season! I picked that pic because it was his rookie draft phot ( I believe). Great draft, looking forward to mini camp next week. It is year round for psychos like me

2. I use gmail and you would have to clean the server out but they give you a TON of space. Here is my current usage:
You are currently using 204 MB (8%) of your 2721 MB.
bb gets forwarded by gmail and outlook express pops it off gmail.

You may be able to fool the BIS service you have multiple accounts and yet still have a forwarded service from your ISPs....

Can you set up some 'dummy' polled accounts on the BIS with custom "from" addresses so you can still select a from list of "from" addresses even though the mail you actually get is being forwarded to your BB?

Figured out my easiest solution:

(1) My main e-mail address forwards to the BB account. Instant receipt, no server issues, and I can make the BB account look like this address (reply to, name, and signature).

(2) Secondary accounts (get lots less mail) are set to be polled by the BB. On Outlook they are set to "leave messages on the server" and then to delete the messages after 1 day. This gives the BB time to pick them off, but still keeps the server clean.

Best of both worlds! (I think)

Wouldn't you get alot of spam that way via forwarding. I also find forwarding really slow using Yahoo.

I do both Pop and Forward.

-My main email address at home and Gmail I forward since those are most important of all.

-My Aol Account I Pop since it's never ever urgent on that thing.

I only like to get the emails on my blackberry that I don't get on my laptop. So I use POP, and as long as the emails are downloaded onto my laptop before the blackberry service checks for them (every 15 mins), I don't receive duplicates.

Help me out. I'm new to pop versus forward. but I like fast email checking.
I know this was sorta covered above but I wanted to clarify what I read.

So like the above post I will use the forward copy ability on my main personal account to get things instantly. But how and where on the BB do I configure the reply address? So it looks like I'm actually in my personal address

I have 2 others that are less urgent but I would like the emails to be both on my computer (outlook) and also on my BB since I search past email for things in them a lot when not at my computer.

Can you tell the BIS to "leave a copy on the server" and how do you do that? I think it does it automatically or else you'd not get your emails in outlook. Is this correct?

Also this means if I want all pop emails to go to my BB also even though my computer has already pulled them I need to check "leave copy on server" so the BB can grab them also. BUT it will fill up the provider unless I clean them out? Unless I use the delete on server after so many days? Can I do that? If I go on vacation and don't pull emails for a while on outlook I can disable it or just put it on like 30 days.

Does all this make sense of should I rethink?

Check out my gmail/yahoo tips page for some information on this topic. Generally most people much prefer either forwarding or filtering over pop. It will work under a variety of options.

I always forwarded the e-mail but now poll because of the spam as you mentioned.
