What format are songs for the iPod saved as, and will the 8100 play these files?

Sorry if I'm dense, but I don't understand all of that. If I have songs downloaded onto my computer from iTunes, can I transfer them to the 8100 and successfuly play them?

iTunes and the iPod use AAC format with Apple's FairPlay DRM. They will only play on an authorized computer with iTunes or an iPod. The Motorola ROKR had the ability to play iTunes songs but that's the only agreement Apple has struck with a third party.

The above statement would only apply to songs PURCHASED via iTunes. If you got them somewhere else and put them into iTunes, then most likely they will play on the Pearl.

So is there no place online where I can purchase music (rhapsody, etc.) that will be playable on the Pearl? Because I believe they all have their own proprietary encoding? Or does anyone know of an exceptioon to this?

Could one theoretically get around this by burning an album (purchased on itunes) onto a CD as mp3s or mp4s or whatever and then transferring them?

Allofmp3.com files work like a champ on the pearl and they are dirt cheap. No more buying off iTunes for me!

So if I have playlists in iTunes comprised of songs off my own cd's, they will play fine via the Pearl?

Because of itunes 7 and their album art download, and having my pearl sync up with my itunes, I now get to see the album art while playing mp3s on the pearl. Isn't that amazing?!

I think... you should be fine as long as your not using apple lossless (highest quality setting) when importing CD's into itunes....just check out your import settings and you'll know what your using for encoding.
