The other day my trackwheel started going heywire and then stopped clicking too. Just returned my 8700G to T-Mob for a replacement. Has this happened to anyone else?

How can I prevent this from happening again?

If I can, I try not to click with the thumbwheel. I will use the enter key or space bar to select something or scroll down a page. I think clicking less will lengthen the thumbwheel's life but sometimes you can't avoid clicking with it.

Use as many keyboard shortcuts as you can to prolong the wheel. Search for Stinsdog's shortcuts very useful document.

2.5+ years of constant thumbwheel clicking had no adverse effects on my last BB. You had a bad unit, plain and simple. Click away!

hmm... i was starting worrying about the trackwheel would be broken because i have been using the trackwheel ALL THE TIME since I purchased the 8700g on 9/24. I will try to use more shortcut and enter key from now on.

Avoiding use of the trackwheel to prolong the life of the device is absurd, IMHO. It's there to be used, and if it breaks you have a defective unit and should return it to your carrier for a replacement. I had my 7250 for 2 years before upgrading to the 8703e, and I use the trackwheel constantly without issues.

well, mfg only covers 1 year warranty. of course if it breaks within the warranty period, I should get a replacement; but i guess if it breaks after the warranty period, i just get a new BB.

Can I use some keys (other than shortcut and the trackwheel) on the application menu in the ZEN theme to select a specific icon?

I see your point however I imagine the shortcuts were developed for a specific reason as well, some ppl prefer the keyboard while others use the wheel. Just like you said

Same theory applies w/the shortcuts.

Personally I find it faster to use the shortcuts than wheel but that is my $.02.

I am on my third Cingular 8700c. The wheel eventually broke on the two first ones.

Agreed. The shortcuts were developed to allow for easier/more direct access to device functions.

I would have also said that it is unreasonable to always use the trackwheel to save wear & tear on the keyboard
