Question PTT on Cingular?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All -

Has anyone gotten a chance to install the PTT functionality into their TMob/Cingular handset yet? I installed Jibi's platform.alx file this morning and updated my phone and, indeed the PTT app is now visible... and called Cingular to add it to my account ($9.99 unlimited) - it initializes and seems to be working, but I have no friends to test it with... any takers?

Stac...

Stupid question, but 'Why do you want to pay for PTT if you have nobody to use it with?'

Funny stuff... I'm the first in my company to get a Pearl and the wheels are in motion for the Pearl to be our 'smartphone of choice' for our managers and execs - so I want to test this to see how well it works so I can make recommendations later if necessary to justify the cost...

If you give me the details of how you install the PTT application on your Pearl, I can do the same on my unlocked Pearl and we can test it.

1 - Go to this thread
2 - For each OS versions released for the 8100, there is a ZIP file; this ZIP file contains the modified Platform.alx file used to unlock the PTT application
3 - Download the ZIP file and extract the Platform.alx file to the correct location (Installation Path)
4 - If the Installation Path does not exist, then you will need to download the OS that accompanies the listing and install it to your PC *
5 - Once the PTT application is installed, you will need to contact Cingular and let them know you want PTT added to your account (as mentioned above, it costs money)

* Note: This depends on the version of OS you have installed on your handheld. If you download a newer OS, then Desktop Manager will attempt to update the OS on the device. This part is up to you.

I have further instructions in that thread that pertains to upgrading the OS and unlocking the themes with BlackBerry.alx file. I've included the Platform.alx file for the 8100 devices, and I will do the same for the 8700 devices once OS 4.2 is released.

Great directions but I have a couple of questions:

1. I don't see on the linked thread a listing for the current Tmobile .64. You do have O2 listed. Would it work ( I currently have Tmobile .64 installed)

2. Do I download the installation file or the Blackberry.axl. Do I need both if I already have .64 installed?

Hi there - yes, the file jibi refers to does, indeed, allow the PTT application to appear int he list of available programs. Once that is done, you must call cingular to enable the service in order for it to work. Let me know if you are still interested in testing...

Thanks,
Stac

Ive got the files loaded, and PTT has been added to my account. It seems to have initialized correctly, so now I just need someone to test with..

I am hoping the PTT works well as I am replacing our five 8700c at my company with 8100c on Friday. I am not expecting it to be as good as Nextel's chirp but hoping it will work for short conversations.

Can you tell me the steps you took to install plataform.axl. I have it donwloaded and unzip ( also blackberry.axl is there too). Once I click Add on my Application loader and select plataform.axl, I get an error message.

I have the installation path on my PC since I have recently upgraded to .64 from Tmobile.

I know I'm doing something wrong just not sure what.. Can you help.?

I think it only works with OS 4.2+, which the 8700 does not oficially have yet..

1 - Options > About
2 - The latest one, which is 4.2.0.67 (for another week or so) - available from Telefonica Moviles (there's a thread); the Platform.alx file found in my ALX thread (Ringtones/Themes forum sticky) can be used to replace the one provided to load the PTT software on the device

We got PTT up and run on both of our Cingular 8100C. Problem is I can not hear my partner but they can hear me. We can not figure out what is wrong as we both have PTT plans and each set up as a valid contact

If you want to test it with me, let me know and I will PM my number to you. We can see if its just your buddies phone and rule that out..

Let me know.
