Default Stolen - BB

Please Login to Remove!

Yes, unfortunately someone has stolen one of our BB's. This BB has SSN numbers in it. (I have a case now to take to the CEO about password policies) Anyways, I have sent a Kill to the BB. How ever, there are pending messages. This means the thief has not turned the BB on.

Therefore, my question is, if there are pending messages and I sent the kill. Is it ok to remove the user from BES or should I just let it sit there until I see everything cleared.

once the device is turned on it will get the kill command.. As long as the SIM Card that is in the device is provisioned for blackberry service. Also if the user turns on the device with no sim they will never get the kill command. So if i was you i would just erase them from the bes.. Something you might want to setup for the future would be to enable Password Security in the IT Policy so all users must have a Password on the device

You should also contact the carrier the device is connect to and have the PIN/IMEI or ESN marked as lost/stolen.

Wait until you see verification of the IT policy hitting the device if you are concerned about the data. Then call the carrier to have it marked as stolen. If you call the carrier first, the data portion will be shut down and the IT policy will not make it to the device. Same thing with removing the user from the bes, if done the kill will not go through unless it has been accepted by the network. Also, be prepared to file a police report if required.

Then call everyone and cancel the police report after the user finds it sitting in a couch or at the bar or something

Ahh this is what I will do. I will keep it on the BES and wait. Yeah we will be enforcing password policys now! God it takes something like this to make my CEO realize how serious this is.

blackberryentp, that is kind of scarry. I thought the BB will get kill command even if they do not have a SIM card because SIM card has no link to the PDA usage and most people keep the sensitive info on these devices .
PDAs do not need a SIM card to boot or use like we have this in case of phones.

I hope providers or RIM do something about it. I know there is a company that provides remote lock/kill facility and I don't know if they are also helpless here.

the KILL command comes down via the Blackberry NOC so there is no way that it will recieve that command if there is no connection to Blackberry.

Yes, the KILL command wipes out everything on the handheld and turns it into a paperweight. Once you get the handheld back you will need to re-install the handheld software and do an Enterprise Activation.

When mine was stolen, I enabled Phone Call and SMS synchronization, locked the device and set a password remotely and configured the home screen text. A teacher at a high school about 30 miles away called me a few days later and let me know he had confiscated it from a student. The person kept turning the device on and off, though.
