Default 4.2.0.89 / 4.2.0.73 Released (Cingular RED)

Please Login to Remove!

So I was just reading BlackBerryCool (hi Steve) about the recent DoS found, and decided to peep the latest downloads. I tried the 8100c Cingular RED model just because I could, and I find:

==
Software For BlackBerry Pearl (Red 8100c)

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.0.89 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 4.2.0.89
Consisting of:

* Applications: 4.2.0.73
* Software Platform: 2.2.0.41
* File name: 8100M_PBr4.2.0_rel89_PL2.2.0.41_A4.2.0.73_Cingular .exe
* File size: 68.02MB

Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.
==

No I don't know what's new but I haven't seen it mentioned yet on BBF, so thought I'd let everyone know. Start here as usual:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...E4F82F9F00E7D4

The 8100c Black Cingular is still listed as 4.2.0.88/4.2.0.71 like before.

I wonder if the Automatic Backlight option will reappear in this OS?

AGH! I just DID a search for this a few hours ago ... it wasn't up at around 3PM this afternoon, so this literally is brand new methinks.

Time to reload .73 with modified vendor themes. Woo!

I downgraded from the 4.2.1.66 TIM release back to this one on my T-Mo unit, it's looking pretty solid - nothing different than .71 is popping out at me right away.

A trimmed backup of the data from 4.2.1.66 (i.e. just address book/bookmarks/messages/etc., no RMS databases or other junk) restored without any problems into this OS release, so my downgrade was painless.

I am, however, reinstalling all the OTA apps (GMail, PicoNews, etc.) from scratch as you'd expect. I wanted to start clean and fresh...

Does the new OS fix the problem with the auto-dimming feature? Can we now turn it on and off?

The 2007 DST patch is still required for this release.

To verify: before installing the patch, in Date/Time you will see "Pacific / Tijuana" grouped as one item, GMT -8. After applying the patch they will be separated into two unique menu entries, as Pacific has changed the dates but Tijuana has not changed.

(there are of course other ways to check but this is the one I use)

Well I can't tell if it's fixed, but it dimmed properly in and out on my trip home. I was walking through shade & sunlight, then got on a bus near a window where we also went in and out of sunlight. The handset seemed to dim and brighten in a proper manner and didn't annoy me.

No.

I too have downgraded from the newst ITA software to this and it has been running smoothly.

No this version does not have the auto-dim feature selectable in the options.

I just downloaded it on my black 8100c. I like the new Cingular theme. I noticed something new: Telenav Maps 1.0. I didn't notice that on the Cingular .71 OS.
If I use this...will it cost anything or is it included in the data plan?

That has to be a Service Book download from Cingular, as I don't see it on mine -- sort of how "OZ IM" is a T-Mobile Service Book pushed out, and not available on Cingular. If you go into Options, Advanced, Service Books -- do you see anything that could look like TELENAV or whatnot?

Wow completely different theme. I'm glad this release came out. I didn't want to go for the TIM release and was feeling a little left out, but then I saw this so now I also have something new!

Turns out I have no service books now. There's no option to send then from the phone anymore, so I went to the cingular site and tried to send them from there. It says the service books were sent successfully, but they aren't showing up. I pulled the battery and still nothing. Does anybody know how long it takes to resend the service books?

Thanks

I can confirm for the sake of your sanity it's not the phone -- my service books from T-Mobile came through instantly, I just resent them for another purpose (OZ IM not working). I know this doesn't help with Cingular books, but the OS itself seems fine.

So is the main difference beteween .71 and .73 (this new version) the new Cingular theme? I don't see anybody talking about anything else.

Does anybody like Telenav? It is the slowest app I have ever used. Google maps is much better IMHO.

That and telenav are the only things I've found.

It's such a minor update in version numbers (and some are the same) that maybe it's all they did was add the new theme for RED. I'm not feeling anything radically different here other than my OZ IM doesn't want to download, which I can live without.

Probably no reason to upgrade from .71 -- does anyone have a bug in .71 they want me to test in .73? (no BT problems, I don't have a BT headset) I can confirm the radio button select in generic J2ME apps is still broken (it's fixed in 4.2.1.66) in this .73 version.
