Ok, I think I know the answer, but I want to confirm with those who are well versed: I've got a 7280 now - if I went and got a hold of a 77xx series BB for ATTWS is it as simple as a SIM switch or will I have to re-set up my service? If I recall I had to register some numbers for my BB so I assume I would have to do that in order for the new BB to work?

1. Back up your BB information from your 7280 to your desktop.
2. Insert SIM into your new BB (Same carrier I would imagine?)
3. Use the Desktop manager to load your back-up file onto your new device.
4. If you use the BWC login, under "profile" there's an option for "change handheld you'll need to apply your new PIN and IMEI numbers and save.

That's it!

It will not work on ATTWS BlackBerries because they are locked to only run on the ATTWS network.

However, Cinguler BlackBerries are fair game, you can use them on Rogers. (My BlackBerry is a former Cingular BlackBerry, a broken one that got repaired)

Hey, that's what I plan to do too, Badger. I have a 7280 on Cingular with 4.0.0.185 OS. I'm below 1 Meg in memory and can't seem to get any more, so I'm upgrading to a 7290 I'm going to buy on Ebay.
Thanks for the explanation on making the switch, finch. BUt what the heck is a "BWC login"?
While I'm at it, what is the difference between a locked and an unlocked phone?

Hi Flightattorney - welcome to BB Forums!

Second question first: locked vs. unlocked. Carriers "lock" phones and BlackBerrys so that you can only use them with their SIM cards (T-Mobile with T-Mobile, Cingular with Cingular, Vodafone with Vodafone). Their claim is that since they subsidize the price of the phone, which they do, they need to recoup the subsidy. But they also charge you an early termination fee on a contract, so they get you both ways. So locked phones have little value if you want to buy a Cingular 7290, on eBay for example, and use it on T-Mobile. Or vice versa.

Most phones can be unlocked very easily. BlackBerrys can not. So, before you buy a 7290, make sure it will work with your carrier. That's about it on unlocking..

BWC login - how do you get your e-mail today? Is it via BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) or via the carrier supplied (actually RIM supplied) BlackBerry Web Client. If you have a corporate BES solution, then ignore the BWC part. Switch the SIM, charge the new BB, hook it to your PC and start Desktop Manager. Away you go.

Thanks for taking the time to give me the info and what may have been a dumb question re unlocked phones. Seems pretty intuitive in retrospect.

I am on Cingular Web Client service. I have had BB for years-my last was a 957, and I've never had the type of memory problems I've had with the 7280. From the formums, I gather I am not alone. So, 7290 with 32 megs seems the way to go.

Anyway, this is the sequence, right?: (1) buy the unlocked or Cingular phone (I have one yr to go on the contract); (2) back up 7280 and load 7290; and (3) use it.

One more step - since you are using the Web Client, you will need to log in (via the Internet) and change your profile to use the new BBs IMEI and PIN; otherwise, the Web Client will try and send your e-mails to the old BB.

What kind of memory problems are you having with your 7280???

Well, I've shrunk the address book, cleared out the browser cache, deleted all phone logs, and all the emails back to 1/1/05. Most of my messages are a paragraph or so.
I have no third party apps, and I have .6 megs available.

As you can probably tell, I'm not much of a techie. To me, the BB is a great tool, albeit a very mysterious tool. For lawyers, its a tremendous help in doing your timesheets, unlike the cell phone, which I rarely use anymore.

How do I search, find and read archived BB files on the desktop?
Can you please point me in the right direction to the correct forum topic? I think I might be asking the question incorrectly; probably not enough TLAs, or something.

See, I knew I was asking it incorrectly. I've been backing up the BB on the desktop using the Manager. I assume there's a ton of old emails in those archives. Many of the "old" emails are no longer on the handheld BB ("HHBB").
I would like to go to the desktop computer, start some program or other, and search my archived emails, for let's say, someone's name or a topic. Then, when I find the proper email in the archives, I would like to read it and/or print it.
But, no.
Were should I go to find the answer, oh Giver of All BB Knowledge ("GOABBK")?

The backup file (something.IPD) is not readable. There are no tools to read the backup. It's meant just for backup/restore recovery. Using another TLA, you are SOL...
