Question edge not EDGE :(

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

I just got the blackberry 8100 and i asked rogers to hook me up with a data package. They said i was all set and that i now have 1.5mb ect ect i asked if i can use blackberry messanger and they said yes. But when i look at my phone i still dont have EDGE in caps i get it sometimes in lowercase and most times it just says GSM :(

sorry if this is in the wrong forum, im just kinda new to blackberry and kinda frustrated with rogers phone support ( keep transfering me and hanging up) so any help would rock.

thanks in advance

edge (lower case) means that you cannot authenticate to the RIM servers. This is usually indicative of a missing Blackberry Data Plan on the account.

I would call Rogers and verify that you have a BLACKBERRY data plan on the account (BIS personal, or BES enterprise). A "normal" data plan won't do. You need a Blackberry Data Plan.

If you do have the correct data plan, and still only get GSM, or edge ... then you may just not be in a good coverage area for data services.
Or.. you could have a defective phone.

Try pulling the battery out for 30 seconds and then replace.
Let us know if it helps!

Thanks for the fast reply!

Im on a family plan with my GF, i asked if i could add data to my plan that would allow me to use all the blackberry features, like BLackberry messanger. She said i could and added something to my account. Are you saying that i need a different "blackberry" Specific package? and can it be added as an extra ontop of my family plan?.

thanks

Yes, you need a specific "Blackbery Data Plan."

You absolutely need a Blackberry-specific plan. There's really no other way around it. Without the Blackberry plan, all your data features (including bb messenger) will be disabled.
If you call Rogers, they should be able to add the Blackberry Data Plan right on top of whatever you have now.
Just make sure it's specifically a BLACKBERRY DATA PLAN. Nothing else will work.

Make sure they remove the regular data plan they added in the first place so you don't have BB data plan, plus a regular data plan.

All fixed, now i got the correct package

just wanted to know a few more things now.

They got me very worried about using to much data, they made it sound like i would be using MB like a feind. How much is average data usage for MSN with light message usage. and the odd Email and Blackberry message being sent.

dosent have to be exact just wanted to get the opinion of someone who uses MSN and has seen a bill with usage on it.

thanks

Why not just get an unlimited plan and not worry about it?

I average about 17000kb per month. My first month with Cingular, I believe I had hit a pretty high mark--- or at least the billing rep seemed to think so. ;)

That is with around 100 emails a day on average, a lot of internet, and being on MSN 8-9 hours a day (though only chatting a fraction of that).

No apology needed. We all needed our time to understand it.

The MSN Contact list shouldn't affect your data usage by the number of contacts specifically. What would cause slightly more usage is if they were always online, but bounced back and forth from Away to Available to Offline, etc..

It's a gamble, and I'm not sure what Rogers offers in terms of data allowance. What are the options? What increments and what budget?

Im paying $40CAD for i think 1.5 or 2mb :( with overage per MB @ $10CAD

They had a $25CAD 0.5 mb plan Overage per MB $31CAD and a $60 3 or 4 mb plan, and thats all she wrote.

not unlimited or megatime usage plans :(

i dont want to be spending more then $50 a month to play around with msn and BBmessanger, might just have to stick with e-mails

2mb should be sufficient- but stay far away from anything other than those IM programs. If you need to download an application, don't do it OTA (over-the-air). Use the Desktop Manager to further reduce the usage of data. I'll pull up my most recent Sprint Bill and check my usage.

Also, it might be helpful to just remove the Internet icons from your Handheld. If you don't see it, it's not there to tempt you.... right!?

EDIT: Can't view Usage until next month. I still think you'll be fine with 2mb.

Heh...seems like you need the right people to contact Rogers for you. I got my buddy at work to call Rogers and now I have a Data Plan with 95 MB and it only costs me 45$. The funny part is they dont even have a 95 MB package caps out at 40 Megs.

Not everyone's in the US (Rogers users certainly aren't).
