FYI:
On my Cingular Blackberry 8800 all I had to do was restore the IPD file and it immediately allowed me to get Yahoo Messenger online.

The article on how to remove the synch service book is no longer available. Can someone tell me how to do it so I can get yahoo! IM working on my 8800 with Cingular?
Thanks,
G

Absolutely. Simply go into Settings > Options > Advanced Options > Service Book and highlight, then delete the Desktop Sync service book, then synchronize, and regenerate encryption keys via Desktop Manager. You'll be good to go from there; just make sure that Y!M is enabled via BES, too.

By the way, on an unrelated note, thank you all very much for all the views and replies so far. I'm glad you're able to make use of this stuff. =]

I don't appear online?
RIM YM on my 8100!! Thanks!
I am able to login and chat, but I appear as offline to everyone else. I've tried various combinations of away and available status, and yes the "Sign In as Invisible" is not checked.
Anyone else seen this?? Any ideas? Kudos, JT

That is definitely very odd. I haven't run across it myself, but I'll try to look into it. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling Y!M?

I got "Cannot restore read-only database(s) on device" so I had to delete the desktop [sync] and desktop [cical] service books, then it worked. Thanks to Spencer CDS for being smart.

How to get your BES Service Books without hassling your BES Admin
This should work regardless of your client and host email server (Exchange, Groupwise, Notes), but my experience is with Outlook/Exchange.
If you have Desktop Manager installed and set up to work with the Outlook, and you've deleted or lost your [Desktop] service books, simply start Outlook in Online/Connected mode, then start Desktop Manager and plug in your BlackBerry. Even with all synchronization turned off in Desktop Manager, it will see your BES and Exchange accounts (over the network connection) and see you're missing the service books and pull them down.
As long as you have a network connection to both your Exchange server and the BES, this should work.

How to generate a new Encryption Key without Desktop Manager
In looking through the posts, I saw a couple of posts related to generating a new encryption key.
Although most reading this post will be running Desktop Manager and be able to generate a new key there, I thought I'd mention that you can also generate a new encryption key on the BlackBerry itself - at least with the 4.2 OS.
Simply go to (Settings/Tools -->) Options --> Security Options (--> General Settings). Scroll down to Services, Click the Wheel or Menu button and select Regenerate Encryption Key. Items in parenthesis may or may not appear on your BlackBerry depending on your theme and carrier and OS version.
You must have [Desktop]... service book selected (highlited) when you bring up the menu or the option will not appear.

this only works if the bb is unlocked.

I followed all the instructions a couple of months ago to get YIM working on my pearl with cingular by installing a service book or whatever via the desktop manager. It worked fine until recently when it started hanging on:
Signing in as xyz
Connecting to Yahoo!
Cancel signin
For a couple of weeks now that has been happening, but if I kept hitting cancel and then trying to sign in again it would eventually let me sign in. Now I can't get in no matter how many times I try. I have tried pulling the battery for a cold reboot too.
Any suggestions? Is anyone successfully signing in from cingular currently?
Thanks,
-K
