I saw in another post where this was mentioned but does anyone have any idea why the Curve only shows 54mb of total memory? This is just strange. Could it be a bug that a future OS will correct? This takes 10mb of memory away right from the start.

Nothing will ever show the full size it's rated at... 64MB Flash cards will always show up a little less (so in this case 55MB), 80 GB Hard drives will always show up, even when empty after a fresh format, around the high 70s.

This is because 2 reasons: For one, the 64MB figure is assuming a straight 64,000,000 byte sized disk. But in the real world, data is all powers of 2 (binary) so each kb is really 1024, not 1000... So when you start multiplying that out, the sizes don't match up with the card says because each byte is using up just a little more (1024) than the 1000 that is printed 'on the box'. So when you have a 64MB drive, it 'looks' smaller because the manufacturer is using a kb size of 1000 whereas the device in practice uses data in kbs that are 1024 in size.

Also, it appears smaller because you have file structure, directory structure, file names THEMSELVES, all this 'meta data' requires its own space, which will also cause a blank formatted drive to be even smaller than the advertised size.

Go to your hard drive and see what your operating system on your computer reports your disk drive as... It will never be the actual "160 Gigabytes" that you see advertised on the box because of these reasons.

You're right about the hex vs decimal thing but with that it should still be showing a total of 62.5 and not 54.

Nice explanation, however its not entirely accurate. My 8700 shows 64,749,568 for "File Total". Its a 64mb device also. I don't understand why my 8300 (another 64mb device) only shows 55,443,456 for "File Total".

How does one delete specific apps off the device?

I used the setup wizard on the device to get rid of languages. But for instance, I want to delete the telenav maps app - how can I do that? When I use the desktop manager, I thought I'd get a checkbox next to all apps, but I only get a checkbox next to google maps...the app I'm replacing the telenav with.

okay - actually - I'm noticing that the Telenav is a link to download the app. But how about the spirit of the question - say I want to delete the brick breaker game or the voice dialing app - how could I do that?

Options->Advanced->Applications

Scroll to the app you want to delete and hit the menu button and select the Delete option

Options, Advanced, Applications, find the app you want to delete, click, Delete.

no matter what is installed but it still should show close to 64mb memory. mine shows 54mb too.

I'm wondering if the Blackberry OS is the difference. It could be 64MB with 10MB for BB OS which leaves 54MB of usable space. Just a thought.

You're probably right, but I sure would feel better if the correct amount of memory was displayed.

I understand. I suspect RIM probably changed it to display the memory that's really usable to us, rather than just showing it all which technically could be misleading. I don't worry much about it though. They don't make memory chips that are 54MB chips, so I have no doubt that it's a 64MB chip in there. The only question I have is whether they really are using the other 10MB for OS storage. I'm sure we'll find out eventually what the real deal is.
