Question Shipping unlocked phone to India

Please Login to Remove!

Hello, am looking to ship a Blackberry 8800 - un-locked to India. Has anyone done this and what are the possible issues that should be addressed before shipping it ?
Regards,
John

i hope payment is straightened up before you send it and most of the time item could stuck in customs and end user will not get it for months after paying 100 os rupees. also Airtel is the only provider that supports BB there and they do not accept BB unless customer buys from them.

Wirelessly posted (Cingular 8100 Pearl: BlackBerry8100/4.2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

I thought Bharti had the Pearl in India. Anyway, whomever is receiving probably has a BlackBerry plan and just wants the latest.

Dedinately have it marked correctly for customs.

I haven't had anything shipped to/from, but a friend of mine brought back some nice thin sandals.

**** BE VERY CAREFUL **** These are usually scams and they are trying to take your money. These are scams so they can use the phones for other scams. . . so be careful even if they promise to send money - it usually bounces. . . do a google search and you will see what a scam it really is.

Id assume he is sending it to a family member or something. Other then customs issues you should make sure their service provider supports Blackberry and will allow them to bring their own hardware.

I was unaware that airtel required you to buy the BB from them. I have not tried them personally however, last time I was there I used tmo's international BB plan.

I recommend selling to someone in US/Canada to be on the safe side unless you are shipping to someone in India who is your friend or someone you know personally or you have the cash in your hands before you ship it, then ship it anywhere....even if someone wants it to be shipped to North Pole Provided that they won't file a claim/complaint with eBay/Paypal, etc stating that you didn't ship them anything, etc.

I am indian myself but will probably won't ship to anyone outside of the US/States unless I know that person.

Thanks for all the plausible responses. To mitigate the confusion - This is not a ebay transaction.
BB 8800 is tad bit pricey if you happen to buy is out right. Apparently, this much cheeper here, ehe ?!
Am still trying to check with Bharti and Airtel if "they do not accept BB unless customer buys from them" still stands valid.

Cheers,
John

Ok I heard about this on Oprah - yes Oprah and she had experts talk about scams. . what happens usually is that they request to pay you off using PayPal and but with fraudelant funds by the time you realize it - its too late. They have even sent over counterfeit checks or cashier's checks that you are left liable for. . . I wouldn't trust it. . . to many cases out there of fraud work ...

Customs duties are usually the responsibility of the importer.

so if u have received payment, i dont see any reason to NOT send it!

I use a 8800 in India with Hutch (another operator, which is now owned by Vodafone). Though I bought the BB from them, I was told that any unlocked BB can be used on their network.

Dont know anout Airtel though!

I'm from mumbai. I used to import CDMA Phones, but the customs really hassel you.
You , as an exporter have no problems. You have to export the phones once you get the 100% Advance T.T.
There are 2 ways of exporting.. 1. Courier 2. Export.
In India, i would suggest Courier in small lots, then u have to pass through the postal customs & not the normal customs but the importer can handle this much more easily.

Airtel & Hutch both have the Blackberry Pearls / 8800 / 8700 / 7100.
BPL also supports Blackberry, but only on your Nokia or SonyEricsson phones.

I know that Reliance (CDMA) is already testing the Blackberry Curve & is shortly coming out with BB service.

If you call Airtel / Hutch and ask them that you have purchased a blackberry from out of India & you want to activate it , they will not activate it for you.
What you need to do is, call them & tell them to activate your blackberry service, if they ask which handset, tell them that you have not decided, but you are planning to buy a nokia 9300 or a nokia 9500 & u want to use it on that, but you want to activate it right away. Your blackberry service will be activated within the next 2-4hrs.
Now you can buy any IMPORTED BB phone (any blackberry phone, from the oldest or the newest)

I actually have an unlocked 8700g which was originally locked onto Airtel (Bharti). After getting it unlocked from Airtel, I went straight to the Hutch shop and got the BB activated, no questions asked.

how did u unlock ur phone?

i dont see why airtel & hutch should sell locked phones. we end up paying the full retail price anyway.
