I just downloaded google maps for my 8100 and I do not have a blackberry data plan. Will I be charged per use by cingular for using google maps?

Yes, you will. Google Maps uses quite a bit of data and I presume that your carrier is going to slam you with usage charges if you don't have a plan.
Honestly... I don't even know if it'll work without a BlackBerry Data Plan.

Thank you for that information. So I guess this will apply to the default maps program that comes with the Pearl as well. I tried calling At&t, Cingular, bellsouth, or whoever they are this week and the lady I spoke with, one had no clue really with what Google maps is and second she tried to tell me that my blackberry would end up not working unless I get a data plan. Gotta love that.

Thanks for the info.

Since Cingular/AT&T don't "support" Google maps, I not surprised that the CS could not help you.
BTW, the default program, BB Maps won't work either... without a BB Data Plan. Must have for Data, email, internet browser, etc.

Well for whatever reason they work for me without a data plan, but I have no idea if I'm being charged or if the information is being transferred through the cell signal...which I have no idea if that is even possible.

If you are not being charged, don't ask, don't tell.
I think some have been able to get it to work with the TCP settings, it just is not consistent.

You might want keep an eye on your data usage if you decide take the "don't ask..." route. The per-use rates are pretty expensive and will make the BB data plan seem dirt cheap.

what takeshi said.

Had a user who went to the Bahamas on vacation - she attempted to request a picture attachment (without internation). The end of the month we received a bill for $21000 - for her account.

I would stop that right now then. If you are getting network access without an internet plan, then you most certainly will be billed for it down the road, and you will have no leg to stand on. Save yourself the grief and just get yourself a BIS plan. I am with AT&T/Cingular and its only $29. MUCH better than what you will be raped with if you keep using Google maps thinking you aren't being charged. Keep in mind it may take time for data to show up on your AT&T web page. After signing up, it took a week for me to see my first data usage report.

Just be warned. And if you still use it heavily, be expecting a big bill. AT&T rarely makes a mistake and gives you free service. And if they did, they WILL end up charging you for it once they realize it.

I just talked to someone here about the situation, and they just laughed. He said you will be slapped by AT&T so hard and there will be nothing you can do.

His advice? Un-install google maps so you don't use it, get a BB plan, and hope you have enough money to cover the bill if you have been using it a while.

I have been using really much at all. I really have no need for google maps or any mapping software let alone a data plan. Thanks for the input everyone.

Ya. I hate for a fellow BB user to be slapped with a huge bill because they don't understand. The members here seem to be a great resource.

yes, you will be charged for data as the BBMaps app uses data to download the map graphics. The GPS (you'll need a bluetooth receiver) gets it's information from satelites and you are not charged anything for that. The above poster was using Google Maps with standard per use data plan using TCP. If you have an unlimited data plan then you will not be charged.

Hi,
Can't we download the maps directly from blackberry site also without using AT&T's data plans like from the following site ?

http://www.blackberry.com/devicesoft...y.do?code=maps

So if i buy my own GPS unit and download the maps directly from the site to my blackberry , then i should not be charged for anything. Is that right ?

Regards
Mandeep

You download any software over the air without a BlackBerry Data Plan.
You also can't use BlackBerry Maps without a BlackBerry Data Plan.

You will still need to use data in order for the route information to show on the BlackBerry, and for that you will need a data plan.
