I have all our music ripped to a WAV Lossless library on our household music server (NAS).

Now I want to bulk convert it to a smaller file size format as a second library that can be used for the BB Curve AND the iPod yet maintain folder structure and album art, etc.

1) Do I convert the Loseless library to ACC?

2) Is the Curve able to retain folder structure and album art, etc. once converted and loaded to the BB?

I think the answers are yes and yes.

I use AAC with my 8800 and it keeps album art, not sure about folder structure cause I dont mess with that too much on my BB. For the Ipod it should be easy to do.

album art & all will be preserved using aac format or mp3 format.

byte for byte i think aac is better for sound quality.

What tool can I use to do this bulk conversion on a PC?

the only tools that i know of that can do "bulk" conversions would be something like WMP 11 or iTunes. with either, you can select the entire library and right click to convert selection to aac or mp3, i think it replaces the wav files with the lossy ones.

that would be the easiest way to go....so all you have to do is copy the entire wav library to a backup location before you do this, after the conversion is complete restore your wav library.

if you use itunes 7, it supports multiple libraries. to enable this, hold down the shift key and start itunes. keep holding the shift key until you get the prompt to choose or create a new library.

I did what you suggested and I tried the ADD FOLDER in iTunes and it does not retain the tags or album art. It does import the individual file, but everything else is lost. iTunes is not a solution.

Did u make sure that your lib location in prefs is set to the same location ?

i created a brand new library the other day it gave me everything. If wav format files cannot store i'd tags or album art, so which album art were you referring to ?

There are some tags and art in the folder placed their by WMP11 I believe. Yes, same location.

so wait, are you trying to import .wav or .wma ? wma will not work with itunes. if you wish to import all you .wav files, open an explorer window with the files visible. then open an itunes session. highlight all the wav files you need to put in itunes, and then drag them into itunes (either to "Library" in the upper left or in the main music listing area). it will then catalog and import the music into itunes. before you do this, make sure you specify where you want itunes to store the music, and also have itunes make a copy the imported music (edit\preferences\advanced...the library location will be there, and immediately below it there is a check box, check it).

if you want to move music into itunes directly from your ipod, enable disk use on it, then go to the "ipod control" directory. in there will be folders which contain the actual songs your ipod plays. you can also drag those directly into itunes, and if you have copy set to on, it will copy them into the library you specified. after that it will quickly catalog everything. if your music that's playing on the ipod has id3 tags + art, they will be recognized by itunes and the songs will come in with the correct names/art.

finally, with all your music imported into itunes as wav, you can hightlight it all, right-click, and then say "convert selection to AAC", or whatever format and bitrate you have preset in edit\preferences\advanced\importing tab.

iTunes also has "Get Album Artwork & Get CD Track Names" as options that can help. I'm sure WMP has it but i dont use it, so i dont know.

I just discovered that when I ripped my WAV lossless files to the NAS using WMP11 that WAV doesn't support tags. All the tags are in files that WMP11 can read.

Guess I have to start over with a FLAC ripping tool that does support tags. Anyone know of one that has a very friendly UI that even the wife can use?
