I've never done any editing to set a pic as background. I just load them into my Pearl's media folder on the microsd chip, view on the Pearl and say to set as background.
The wallpaper has always come out fine.
I guess size could be an issue because as far as I know the Pearl does not reduce it for wallpaper use. In other words, I don't think when saying to set as the "homescreen" that the Pearl reduces the file size and transfers it to the Pearl itself. It always stays on the chip if that is where it originally resided.
Like others have said, you can also view a pic, zoom in, and then tell the Pearl to make it your homescreen. The homescreen image will then be in the zoomed format that you selected.
As to a white border, I thought that only happens when the pic is smaller than the Pearl's window. I have never seen a white border on any of the pics I have selected for my homescreen.
By the way, one quick way to experiment with different homescreens is to simply take pictures with the Pearl and then tell it to set the current pic as your homescreen.
I used to do that to get different solid color backbgrounds in shades that I wanted. Sometimes I would take a pic of a kitchen countertop, for example, zoom in, and set as my homescreen. The range of colored homescreens is unlimited in that regard.
But many people take pics of loved ones, pets, etc. and set those as their wallpaper/homescreen.
