Default Mapquest Navigator

Please Login to Remove!

In another thread a poster mentioned Mapquest Navigator was free; will work on the Curve and to just use the Sprint version for the most recent BB. My questions are:

Which is the latest BB to use on Sprint... the 8703?

Also, Mapquest says "download a 30 day trial"....does anyone know if it is the trial version that's free or if the program itself is free? Just want to make sure before I download.

Thanks

PS: posted this another thread and was told to move it so if I happen to offend someone with this post I apologize in advance

Uh, not sure about the 30 day trial. I've had mine working on the 8800 for well over 3 months.

By the way, i think this is the best GPS software out there. It downloads te map data (your route +/-a few streets in case you goof), so it doesn't need to constantly download content via the network. Thus, it works much like all the other GPS systems out there. Yes, it has a few drawbacks, like it doesn't voice out the names of non-major streets (will do for highways, etc), but honestly - do you really need it to tell you the name of the street - just turn left, right, etc!!! It works great and gives nice, clear instructions. Plus, you can get phone calls while using it, since it already downloaded the map data!

I think it should work on the curve as long as you have a bluetooth GPS receiver enabled.

Default Mapquest Navigator

I had originally downloaded it about 3 weeks ago before I got the puck. By the time I got the puck it didn't work, so I'm pretty sure there's a trial period, but I'll try it again...

I DL'ed this the other day and it did look good, but I could not get it to work with a puck and the 8300. And since I was well within a 30 day timeframe for trying all I can determine is that this app does not work with an 8300 and puck.

YMMV. I'd be interested to know if anyone with an 8300 got this to work with a BT puck. Specially, the app runs, but no GPS when you get a route -- like it looses the connection the the GPS (wierd).

It does work with the 8300 and a puck, but you are right as soon your route is downloaded it seems to lose the GPS connection. In my experience it does this every single time but will usually work itself out. But I've seen it where it doesn't work at all.

A puck is an external gps for phones with no internal gps. It has no software on it.

Not sure about mapquest, haven't used it, but you would need one to get gps on your curve - google maps (NOT the new version 1.6) Telenav, yahoo Go...

I have been trying to get it to work and it does work about 20% of the time. It takes a long time to find the GPS, where Google Maps or Telenav can find the GPS in a few seconds. It loses the GPS connection as soon as the route is downloaded and cannot connect to the GPS after that if you are moving. If you make a wrong turn it instructs you to make a U-Turn and then trys to re-calculate the route and once again loses the GPS. Very frustrating. I sent and e-mail to the MapQuest Support and there has been no answer. I am in the 90 day trial period and I an thinking of removing it from my Blackberry Curve and just use Google Maps. I wish there was a GPS software that could be installed on the Blackberry and not have to rely on an online service and pay almost $10 a month for something that does not work most of the time.

Just save yourself the frustration and delete it. That's what I did because I had the exact same problems you do.

If you're asking whether you have to buy an external GPS puck to be able to use GPS features with Mapquest (or any other) Curve mapping software, the answer is yes...you have to buy a separate device (known as a puck). The Curve does not come with GPS built-in; you buy that capability separately and then activate it using your phone's Bluetooth application.

Thanks I did just that. It seems to me that MapQuest Navigator does not work well with an external GPS puck.

It's been working perfectly for me. I have the GlobalSat GPS puck. I just pair it to the BB, go to Options->Advanced->GPS, select the BT puck, then open Mapquest Navigator. It takes a few seconds to find a signal, but it works flawlessly after that.

If I leave the BT puck on but take my Curve out of the car, it's a pain to get it back working again, but it will work. Close out of Mapquest Navigator, repair/refresh the BT connection, re-open Mapquest Navigator, and get moving. It works for me every time.

I have to say, I really like this app. There are some things that make no sense (like it says "e-x-i-t" instead of exit), but overall, it's great.

Use the Google Maps instead. Free and works like a charm. Traffic feature is a dream come true. Avoid sitting on the freeway with everyone else.

It wont do turn by turn navigation. Google maps is great to use in addition to this, but it doesnt replace it.
