Flashing 8820 with a "naked OS"
Please Login to Remove!
Hi,
i own a 8820 with french Orange carrier. I can't use the BIS connection through wifi except if i'm connected through an Orange Router. i've tried everything it's simply impossible.
So what i want to do is flashing the device with a RI? naked OS. According to you is it possible? Will i still be able to connect to the BIS?
where can i find such an OS?

remove the vendor.xml file, and you have what you call a "naked" OS.

Not really. The vendor.xml file controls what should be installed on a phone based on it's Vendor ID on the phone itself. There is no "naked" OS for a BB unless you can get your hands on a release from RIM themselves or find a way to change the Vendor ID in the boot ROM back to the RIM default which is 000.

No matter what you do you will get the original carrier splash screen. I have seen a non carrier test Blackberry that splashed "Blackberry" on the screen at startup but that was long ago.
I have not heard of anyone reflashing the ROM outside of RIM.

Ditto what JR and Greg stated. The closest you will get is as was described.

In addition, if you flash with an OS not designed for your specific device/model you might be doing more harm than good.

I have no idea why people get irritated with the splash screen, but if someone could come up with a way to flash the ROM, it seems like a ton of people would be willing to pay decent $$ for the service. Actually, I'm surprised RIM doesn't offer it themselves -- they're leaving some money on the table.

RIM has no desire to reflash their devices. They simply want to build to the carrier's needs and sell them. They have done a great job!

Guys,
This is not about removing the splash screen but more about certain capabilities that can't be used with certain operators. For instance, in the US, the UMA service with tmobile can connect through any wifi router and use it to make calls, however in France, in order to use the equivalent service, called UNIK in France by Orange, you will need to have internet by Orange and using only their WIFI device. I have the same issue because i have an 8820 that will only connect through the orange/france telecom internet service which means if i want to use this service i will need to switch to another internet provider and also use their WIFI device.

That's a service provisioning thing, not an OS lockdown thing.

Right now TMobile US is the only carrier offering UMA. I have heard that a carrier or two were testing it in Europe but can't remember which ones. Until they "turn it on" you won't be able to get UMA or similar with any carrer but TMobile US.

if i take my unlocked Orange france 8820 and insert my t-mobile SIM card in the US, assuming that i added the UMA plan, will i be able to use the UMA or is this capability locked out since this was an Orange branded phone?
thanks.

If the SIM on the phone is unlocked (i.e. unlocked phone) then UMA should work if you have it on your T-Mobile account and you use that account's SIM.

Nope, UMA will only work with the devices that TMobile specifies. An unlocked wifi 8820 will not get UMA on TMobile.
