Default Questions about development

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I have poked around the site on a number of occasions trying to find answers to my questions so if I have missed a previous post please excuse me but, if you can help great.

I am developing an new system that has a mobile component. As such we are replicating data to and from the desktop dashboard via xml over web services. Can the same method be used over mobile internet to blackberries or do I have to go through the Blackberry Enterprise Server? What issues do I face?

Also, where on earth can I locate a blackberry developer? someone who knows the problems associated with the technology and who can do the work? (OK yes I know I should be posting on the job forum but as I am writing......)

I am based in the UK. Thanks for looking. Even more thanks if you can help.

You can write network aware BB apps... but sometimes it's a crap shoot

It depends on a few key factors
  1. Your service provider
  2. If your BB was set up properly

Some service providers will allow the network aware applications to work perfectly (in Canada Rogers would be an example) whereas other providers lock down their network (for whatever reason - Bell would be an example)

If you want to ensure that your apps work perfectly regardless of your service provider then you will have to be attached to a BES server.

Thanks....you have just confirmed what I have been picking out of all of the sites I have been trawling through. In order to become attached to the BES servers do I have to have my application registered (opened up) by the service providers?

As soon as you attach your BlackBerry to a BES server all data is routed through that server, so nothing has to be opened (AFAIK - I'm not a BES admin though)
