I have a 2gb card in mine with a few videos and a lot of music on it. I use it when I'm working out, in the car, and when I'm at work. It beats carrying around more devices since I have a bb for personal and one for business.

I use it for all my unprotected music (podcasts, ripped CDs), using Windows Media Player to manage the transfers (it will recognize the media card when Mass Storage Mode is turned on).

Unfortunately, I still have to use dedicated portable players for my music subscription service. Doubt that will ever go away, as I don't see RIM wanting to venture into the Digital Rights Management issues for music.

I use it when I'm walking my dog so I can have a phone with me.

Unfortunately, I think you may be right. It'd be nice to have one device. But my mp3 player is pretty small so it's not a big deal to carry that while travelling.

my ipod died about a month after I got my first BB. I haven't replaced it. I put my favorites on a 2gb card and kept on trucking.

I have been using mine as an iPod for the drive home from work. I have about a half hour to 45 min drive home and it helps.

In the morning I have Kidd Chris!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8310/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Yup I do it as well! I don't like carrying two devices on me while working out or travelling!

I have also replaced my mp3 player with my BB Curve. I used to use a boom-box in the bathroom to play tunes when I took a shower in the morning. Now I just use some old PC speakers and plug them into my BB and put the phone under a towel to keep the steam away from it. Works great! I've used my Curve for a wedding I was hired to DJ. At the last minute, they needed a second sound setup and I had enough equipment for the job but didn't have a second laptop for the music. I used the Curve to handle the playback for the wedding ceremony without a hitch!

I still wish the built-in player worked a little better than it does but it's not bad. I just can't load a FOLDER into the player -just a pre-made playlist or any detected artist or album read from the ID3 tag information. There are 3rd party players that allow me simply to add a single file or folder but, so far, none that will allow me to pause and come back later to the same point (very important for podcasts that are over an hour long. I also wish there was a way to advance 5 seconds from a hot key, or to do more precise playback time selection but nothing is perfect.

I'm running with a 4GB microSD card and couldn't be happier with it. One less thing to carry around in my pocket. I eventually got me a stereo bluetooth headset (the Motorola S9) and have made my workouts a real pleasure. No longer am I worried about my headphone cable getting caught in a machine or by my arm on the treadmill. I also never miss a call when I'm working out! Just push a button on the side, take the call with the same headset, and when I hang up it goes right back to where the music was paused when the phone rang. Awesome.

Looks like I'm the only one who isn't completely satisfied with the media player... here is the shortlist of my reasons why I'm unsatisfied.

1) Drains battery. I'd rather use my blackberry for email/talking/texting/web/etc. and nothing is more frustrating than a low battery.
2) Awkward controls. Given they do the best with what they have been given, I still find navigating playlists and tracks cumbersome.
3) That pesky GSM interference is way too distracting to use in the car.
4) Not enough memory! Even in an 8gb.
5) DRM music files... previously mentioned, and annoying to me for all the same reasons.
6) Desktop management is a little bit of a pain since I use iTunes for everything else.
7) Video quality is poor. It may be better than a lot of phones, but it's still too choppy for me to watch an entire TV episode or movie on.

If my 'berry was my only option, I'd definately use it as my media player. However, I already own multiple iPods and am not yet satisfied with the level of convergence. I'm sure RIM has improvements are on the way, but until then, I'll carry two devices.

There should be no reason why a software vendor can't address the DRM issues for a media player app for the BB, RIM wouldn't have to address it themselves. The reason I say that with a fair bit of confidence is, in addition to using mine as an mp3 player, I also have Audible's AudibleAir app on it, and listen to their DRM audio books often. Now I'm not sure that Apple gives anyone enough info to deal with iTunes, but if you're talking about other DRM protected subscription services, seems a BlackBerry player should be possible.
