i cannot send SMSs. i receive just fine, but there is no option in the menu to compose or reply to one.

when i go to tthe "messages" folder and click the wheel, the options i get are:

Help
-----
Compose Email
Place Call
-----
Search
View Folder
View Saved Messages
-----

Can anyone help?

Try a battery pull. If that fails you make want to call the carrier and ask them if you have SMS on you account (might have been removed if you just got a BB Data Plan). Otherwise, ask them to resend your service books.

Good Luck and sorry that you have to make a phone call if it comes to that.

ditto what ^^ he said.

Did you leave the BB powered ON, remove the battery and hold for 30 seconds?

Try it again. I would before calling.

Yes, remove the battery while the device is on and leave out for 30 seconds. The Black Magic won't affect anything...

Nah, I wouldn't rip it out, you may decide not to, also.

A) Leave the BB powered on. Do not power down or go on standby.

B) I would remove the battery cover. Slip a finger name at the top edge of the battery and remove. Note how the battery was removed, as you will need to replace it just the reverse order.

C) Hold both the BB and the battery in your hand(s) for a bit, many people recommend about 20-30 seconds. Replace it carefully noting the contacts end is inserted in first. Replace the battery cover correctly.

Does that suit your needs?

Is this a new or previously owned (used) BlackBerry. It may have an IT Policy on it that has disabled SMS.

Go to Main Page - BlackBerryFAQ.com and find the page on Removing an IT Policy

There is a policy restricting some features, and forcing the Password.

Knowing that you got it from eBay would have been helpful in the first thread. There is also a thread here about the dangers of buying a BlackBerry on eBay.

AT&T does not routinely add SMS service to BlackBerry lines. I would call ATT and ask them if you have SMS on your line now. As you mentioned, you had it before, but since you just got a new device, it's entirely likely that your rep did not put in back on.

What solved it? Carrier provision or removing the policy or both?
