8320 signal randomly drops to "GSM" instead of "EDGE"

This is really odd. I've used many different BlackBerries, including both the 8300 and 8320 (which i'm currently using on t-mobile)
Recently my 8320 seems to like going to "GSM" mode instead of "EDGE" for no reason whatsoever, intermittently. I'm trying to avoid a software wipe, but I live in Minneapolis, and there's no reason why it should ever drop to just GSM with data service here, especially when I'm outdoors. and it has worked previously in these same areas on EDGE. Sometimes if i turn the wireless radio off for 30 seconds or so and bring it back, it pops back immediately on EDGE.
This isnt as much of a problem when I'm at work or at home, because it uses UMA at those places.
What say you forum? Do you think my device's radio is messed up, should I try a software reload before chucking it against the wall? I have the latest T-Mobile software version and this only started recently. Maybe I should wait til 4.5 to mess with it.
