Default Temporarily changing Blackberry device

I have what I hope is a simple question.

All of our devices are 8703e (Verizon Wireless - CDMA).
We are in the USA. We have a user that is going to travel to Europe and we're getting for him an 8830 and a SIM, including global service from Verizon.
My question is: what's the best way to switch him from his 8703e to the 8830 and back to the 8703e when he returns in a few weeks?
Can I just enter a new activation password in BB Manager and active the 8830 wirelessly or do I have to "Erase Data and Disable Handheld" on the 8703e first?
Thanks in advance for any advise,

If he doesn't need any programs off his BB, all he needs to do is activate his email on the new one.

Thanks, bakerfall.
Clarification, please. Do you mean, his current, now working, 8703e does NOT need to be erased and disabled? when the 8830 is activated, the 8703e will simply stop sync'ing and that's the end of it?
Thanks,

You do not need to do anything with the 8703e. Just activate the 8830 with a new activation password and that one will start getting the emails. When he returns, just reactivate the 8703e.

He will not receive any past emails on his 8830, and when he reactivates the 8703e, there will be an email gap from when he was using the 8830.

Actually, the device will prepopluate with messages based on your BES settings. The default is 7 days and 350 messages I believe. To check yours click on the server name in BB Manager. go to the 'Server Configuration' tab and click 'Edit Properties.' Click Messages and the settings are under 'Message Prepopulation.' You can prepoplate up to 14 days or 750 messages, but cannot exceed either limit. (i.e. if you have 750 messages in 5 days, that's all you get)

Thanks a lot to everyone for the quick answers. I'll keep my fingers crossed that there are not glitches.

If the user has Desktop Manager installed on his computer, the 'Switch device' options would be the easiest way to go. It takes a full backup of the old device (including applications), and transfers it to the new device. You will then have all the messages availiable (not only the prepopulated ones defined by BES).

I believe that prepopulation of messages requires the user to be removed and re-added on the BES. Can anyone confirm this?

Again, thanks everyone.
It took a call to Tx1 to get the 8830 activated. I had to delete the user from BES, re-add him and then activated successfully the 8830. Support said for some reason BES was trying to do something with both devices at the same time.
I was impressed with the Support. I was on hold no longer than 1 minute, I sent them a log file which the looked at with me on the phone and waited patiently until the device was activated successfully.
