I've never really had a solid answer to this question so I thought I'd ask those of you that have experience with it...
As far as I know, T-Mobile and AT&T only offer 2 year contracts. What happens if you cancel your contract e.g. 4 or 5 months through? I always assumed you would be forced to pay the amount of whatever months you have left, but that sounds a little excessive. I read something the other day about a $175 early termination fee for canceling with AT&T. Is that it? Or is it more like $175+the months you have left x the minimum monthly fee?
I'm not looking to cancel. I am however thinking about signing up for an AT&T account along with my current T-Mo account, and keep whichever service I prefer after a month of two - and cancel the other. Any word on T-Mo's cancellation policy?
Many years back, I cancelled ATT and it was $175 with many months left to go. As mentioned above, there used to be a sort of pro-rate on the cancellation, but I haven't heard of that in a long time.
I moved and T-Mobile had no to very poor service at my new house.
They didn't care and wanted $200 per phone, I have 5, to cancel my contract.
After trying to get them to do something I gave up and contacted the state Attorney General.
Suddenly T-Mobile saw it my way and let me out with no fees.
Something to remember.

I think most of the major carriers have the 30 day test drive, so if AT&T doesn't suit your needs, try Verizon or Sprint too. I will never switch from Verizon, but each carrier has their strong points. Good luck!
Sprint is considering selling or spinning off Nextel, possibly to make the remainder of the company more attractive to Deutsche Telecomm. The Nextel organization is rumored to target public safety employees as their new market niche.
