My little cousin installed 4.5 on my 8700 after he heard me talking about it (little beggar thinks he's a tech wiz, *sigh*) -- anyway, I called AT&T because my browser icon had vanished (Cingular browser was still there), and they eventually put me in touch with a RIM tech. He told me I was running 4.5 (imagine my surprise, I thought my cousin had just installed a new theme :P) -- and they were able to see I was running 4.5 remotely, ie I didn't tell them.
Anyway, the rep. was very helpful and spent over an hour trying to get me the right service books on 4.5 (I was missing the Blackberry Internet Browsing Service one), and eventually said that AT&T is probably limiting the version range of the service books -- something he said they can choose to do on BIS -- and he wasn't able to bypass the filter.
Eventually he gave up, and stepped me through downloading 4.2 and downgrading to it. Once in 4.2, the browser icon came back w/o problems.
After all the time spent, I figured I'd post my experience here for posterity. So, does anyone with an 8700 on AT&T have a working internet browser under 4.5? Guess I'm stuck with 4.2 for now -- and I'm going to keep my Blackberry out of Tyler's hands from now on!
