I'm sure it's in this thread already but here it is again:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/medi...t-reboots.html

It's likely a .dat file or one of your pic or video files causing the rebooting.

There are three version numbers. The first is the build or release number (in this case 4.5.0.81.) Then there is the Application version number (in this case 4.5.0.55.) It's usually lower than the release/build number. Then there is a platform version number (in this case (2.7.0.68.) It's kind of separate from the application and build numbers and refers to the radio software.

Generally, on the forums we refer to the Application version number.

If you want to see the build number on your device type in alt + e a c e. You'll see the Application version number followed by the build number in parenthesis i.e. 4.5.0.55 (81)

Having some pretty big problems with 4.5

Just upgraded today, and all was going great until the phone started freezing. Not rebooting, locking up all together. I pull the battery, restart, and as soon as it's started, it's frozen once again. I'm using a 4GB card with music wallpapers and photos on it.

Pulled the card, formatted it, changed Vista to show hidden files, deleted all the .dat files in the old backup copies I had made, and copied each song back over to the card one by one, and each photo one by one, that way I could be sure there were no old .dat files messing everything up.

Phone is still resetting. I'm getting so sick of providers/manufacturers being late to the game with updates, I jumped ship from HTC because of this, and now here we go with the BlackBerry

The only thing I wanted was to be able to create playlists Time to go back to 4.2 I guess.

DAMN YOU PHONES!!!!!! lol

I've done it three more times, and even just tried with a freshly formatted blank card with no pics or music on it...still freezes on "MESSAGES" on the home screen every time wtf :(

How much free memory do you have? It may not be 'freezing', but rather just performing a memory collection process.

Does the device work ok if you remove the card completely?

Looked to be only 16mb last time I checked. It definitely freezes up, I left it for about 15 minutes one time and came back to see if it was still froze up and it was.

Haven't tried it completely without the memory card yet, don't know if I'm going to, might just go back to 4.2. If I can't use a memory card in the phone what's the point, you know?

Yes, but if you remove the card that narrows down the problem. Just try it without the media card installed at all. Then, if its the media card, we can focus on what to do with that.

OK I've had the media card out for about 20 minutes now and it hasn't locked up yet, which is much much longer than any other time (10 seconds -5 minutes before it froze)

Also, will themes mess anything up? I also have a few apps, Google Maps, GMail, and MyAlarm and a Stopwatch program.

Ok...so, you pulled the memory card and the problems have gone away. That obviously points to a problem with the memory card. There is a file on the card that is conflicting with the OS. I would backup the contents of the card and then reformat it in the BB. Then move files back one folder at a time until you find the folder that is causing the problem. When you find the folder that's causing the problem, then you can narrow it down to the specific file. .dat files aren't the only files that can cause problems. You can have a corrupted video or picture file, too.

So I've tried formatting it and leaving it blank, and it's been running without a hitch since.

Does this mean I can't put those photos or music back on it because they're corrupted? Is there any way to find out what files are screwed up? Or should I just re-download all the music files and put them on so they're not corrupt?

PS Thanks for all the help everyone + John Clark, I don't have too much patience and sometimes get frustrated

I explained fully in the post above. Just restore folder by folder to start. Then narrow down to which file. Many have come back after doing this and said, "oh yeah, I had a video (or picture) file that never really did work right that was causing the issue."

You need to use some common sense and process of elimination.

Ahh ok that makes it a little easier to narrow down. Trying music first.

i'm downloading this new upgrade. i clicked on 'advanced' and unchecked all the foreign languages. i noticed that bb maps and documents to go and a few other options were unchecked. should i have checked those? maybe it's just each person's preference.

i also got this Warning just before i click 'finish'
...you must activate your device wirelessly to continue to send and receive messages and use other BB services....
i canceled it. got scared. i'll wait till someone responds to this post.

one more thing. i read just before i was going to download the new OS, it would do a restore during the installation process. does this mean i don't have to backup my device then do an install? sorry, i'm just not getting it.

Thanks

1. You should check the items you want, and you do want DocsToGo, as our experience has been that D2G not installed will keep some other third-party-apps like JiveTalk and others from working, so install that. I don't install BBMaps anymore, as I don't need it, there are too many other good GPS mapping applications out there.

Taken from Guru John Clark's Memory Optimization Thread, I do the same as this:
Quote:
Personally, I uncheck the following:

All foreign languages.
Any preinstalled IM applications (since I use JiveTalk)
Any foreign Characters and Font Support
Blackberry MDS Runtime
Blackberry Sample Video
Brickbreaker
DOD Root Certificates
Help (if you are new to BB you may not want to remove this as it can be "help"ful.

And I make sure the following ARE checked:
Core Applications
Blackberry Attachment Service.
Blackberry Messenger (if you don't have a data plan or you don't use it, this is a good one to uncheck. You can always plug in and check it again later if you want it back.)
Any other apps as desired ( tasks, memo pad, Password Keeper, Documents To Go etc.)
Any Third Pary Apps I want to leave installed on the device.
2. Say OK to that warning, your device will be activated on reboot and receiving the necessary service books from ATT.

3. I do a routine backup before any upgrades as a habit. However, the OS upgrade itself does do a backup as well. I am just overly redundantly safe.

You can proceed...

I just got done installing the new phone OS and, much like everyone else, I am truly impressed with it. Thanks for helping to make it available to us! In a bit I will install the newest version of the DM and hope for even more surprising improvements.

You've all helped to make my day a better one, so thanks again!
