Default How to use the 8700C as a modem on a Thinkpad T42P

Please Login to Remove!

I have an IBM Thinkpad T42P and a Blackberry 8700C. I have it setup via Bluetooth and the Thinkpad see's the device. Thier is a Standard Modem but querying that does not see the Blackberry as a modem. I work as a technician on a corporate help desk and my end user's are getting Blackberry's with EVDO support so I need to figure out how this needs to be setup. I can be contacted at [email address]. Thanks

I would love that info. In fact one of the reasons I got my 8700c is to link it via bluetooth to my T41.

Say did you use the bluetooth network settings on the Thinkpad and selected Use paired devices to go [online]?

I was trying that but i didnt work for me.

thanks.

Thanks!

Default gotta skip a step

The only way i got mine to pair correctly was by doing it from the properties window after enabling blurtooth in this window. i had to delete previous pairing from my laptop make this work. I HAD to pair it from that step to set it up correclty...

If your referring to using the BlackBerry as a modem via Bluetooth. It is not possible. You can only use the BlackBerry as a modem if tethered via USB cable. There are a number of posts on how to use the BlackBerry as a tethered modem. One is even a stickied thread, HOWTO: Use BlackBerry As Modem For Laptop!

An even shorter answer is...
  1. Call Cingular and add tethering to your account (extra charges apply).
  2. Download and install Cingular Communication Manager. Reboot when prompted
  3. Launch Cingular Communication Manager and follow prompts.
  4. Browse web using BlackBerry as modem.

I then went to sync my bb with laptop and then opened outlook and my maill was downloaded. now unless i was somehow picking up another wireless signal, which i am alsomt sure i was not, this worked just fine. I am currently in my office but will prove/disprove this tonight...

I have never used MobiShark myself, but according to the MobiShark website you are tethered via USB, not Bluetooth.

Quote taken from http://www.mobishark.com/about.htm
At this time supports only USB connection (not Bluetooth) between handheld and laptop. So you need to have the BB desktop manager installed on the laptop that you want to use the shark modem on.

If I post something incorrectly, feel free to point it out. We all make mistakes, including moderators. As long as you are not name calling, or being abusive, I dont have a problem with it.

Yes, it is possible to sync via Bluetooth. It is not possible to use a BlackBerry as a modem for your computer via a Bluetooth connection.

All the info I see on the Cingular site refer's to only tethering via USB. Thier is even a table listing the ways you can connect a PC using Windows XP to a RIM BB 8700C. I go into the BB Device Manager and put a check on "Enable Bluetooth Support" and click on Configure Bluetooth, it gives me an error of "no port service on the device". I work on a corporate help desk, so I am doing this for someone else. On my BB 7250, I had to upgrade the OS on my BB and then dial into my service provider, Verizon, to enable the EVDO support on my BB. It was not enabled by default and the OS version that was on my BB, did not support EVDO even though the hardware did. Yes, the plot sickens. Does anyone know how to enable the EVDO support on a 8700C with Cingular as the service provider? I am the first point of contact for BB support in my organization. Thier is someone else but all he does is add the user's to the BES server so that they can send and receive thier exchange email on our network. Later.

8700C with EVDO?
The 8700C is on the EDGE (GSM/GPRS network), not CDMA/1X network.

BTW...T42 FTMFW!! So much better than my old T21.
Can't wait to test out the new Lenovo T60!!

Default Wow. I get to be the jackass that tells you.

Sadly ... Cingular doesn't do EV/DO. There are two big technologies broadcasting to digital phones ... one uses EV/DO (Verizon and Sprint use it ...) and the other uses EDGE for high-speed data.

They don't have an EV/DO 8700 ... Verizon offers a 7250 (that apparently delivers some pretty good tethered download rates) that does EV/DO, but the 8700 series is all engineered around the EDGE/GMRS/LMNOP/Whatever standard.

Sorry. At least you're not the guy that resets everybody's passwords.

Default Gprs

Click start/ right side connect to/ and there should be a list of available connections, i.e. router, gprs, aircard...
