I really like this new version of the OS. It seems much more responsive and I love that the photos of my contacts now appear (note, you need to have photos of your contacts saved in Outlook for this to work).

I followed the directions in this thread and didn't encounter any issues at all. Deleting the vendor file and using the latest version of the desktop software are a must if you want a flawless install.

After the installation was complete, I had to load a theme in order for the BlackBerry to look normal. Before I loaded the theme, I had simplistic black and white images. My guess is that it went to this basic theme because I previously was using the Wave Icon theme which apparently isn't supported by this version of the OS (bummer). I'd assume that if you are using a theme that is supported by this version of the OS, it will just transfer over and you won't see the lame B/W icons.

One other thing, my BlackBerry was unable to load web pages at first. I had to go into the settings and enable my cell phone broadcast. After that, the thing worked perfectly.

Overall, it seems like the performance is much improved. The backlight turnsoff immediately after I lock the phone. There is no lag time when I click through menus. Normally I would have to push a button to wake up the phone and then stat entering in my password. Now I can just start typing the password and the phone accepts the keystrokes and wakes up at the same time.

I'm running an 8700g on T-Mobile using a BES. If you don't mind losing your Wave Icon theme, upgrading to this OS is a great idea.

Nice job picking up on the B/W icon theme. You hit it right on the head. A simple scroll to the swiss army knife icon and select themes and then change themes fixes that problem right up. It happened exactly for the reason you stated.

You will have to reactivate on your BES after the upgrade. If your desktop manager is installed correctly to pull your corporate email profile and you have an online connection to your corporate email during the upgrade then the activation will occur automatically. If not you'll need to contact your IT department for an enterprise activation password. It only takes them a minute to put one in for you.

I've just put on the Rogers 4.2.1.101 code and experienced a few issues which I think I've work through enough to my satisfaction:
1) After the upgrade I didn't have the ability to Send when I used Reply or ReplyToAll. Only if I selected the message to forward did I have Send. New messages were fine. I ended up having to nuke the device (jl.exe -usb wipe) and reload the new OS did I get Send functionality.
2) Selecting folders for redirection, to expand, I have to wheel-click and select Expand. Annoying and not obvious, but manageable.
3) Had to reactivate my device twice to get everything working again. First time it said it completed, but really it hadn't, none of the setting came down, reconcilliation only worked on the Inbox. Wipe and reactivated, reminiscent of the original 8700 code when first released.

I wouldn't say it's any faster or slower, but at least the font is clearer again.

I've been running the OS for a few days and noticed a few improvements that are worth calling out.

1. There is an icon for new mail in your inbox. Previously I would just see an envelope icon if there were unread mail. Now I see an envelope with a red asterisk when there is new mail. The regular yellow envelope still shows when there are unread items.

2. The photo tool is now a media manager. When you open the app, you choose between music (your ringtones) and viewing images. At a glance, this looks like an interface I'd assume you'd find on the Pearl. I've never used a Pearl though, so I can't say for certain.

3. Images associated with your contacts appear when you make calls. Previously I had only noticed photos appearing in my address book. Since then, I've seen them pop up when placing or receiving calls. This is great!

On the downside, I've noticed a slight lag at times when I enter in my password. There is a delay of a fraction of a second before the screen image pops up after I hit a key. Sometimes I see a white screen flash before the regular screen appears.

One other downside is an occasional delay between the time that I press a key and when I hear the tone. Usually this is with the mute button when I place a call. I'll hit mute and then hear the tone half a second later. I never noticed this lag with the old OS.

In short, the slight delays are well worth the improved features. I think the OS is well worth the upgrade.

where did you find .101. i have to pull my battery several times a day. the internet will stop working(gets stick on page request) and my email messages will not reach me. i pull the battery/reboot and i am good for another few hours. I like 4.2 but would like a smoother ride than the bumpy one i seem to be on. T-Mobile told me i should just go back to 4.1. i don't think so. i like the features on the 4.2. they said that there where a few bugs in the version that they released. i am almost ready to go back to the first 4.2 release from south america.

I've just managed to lay my hands on a hand-me-down 8700v after 3 years with a long suffering 7100g. Took the opportunity to upgrade to 4.2 prior to transferring everything over.

Overall, it is a huge improvement for me, and one major improvement is the ability save group SMS lists. There are still a couple of bugs with this, but finally the functionality afforded by cheapo Nokia's is now on the BB. Also like the ability to just type a name directly to do a phone book lookup - I missed this feature from my old Treo days.

What are the improvements in .107?

I think it is a spam on how some companies sell you a locked blackberry and telling you that it is unlocked. How bad is that? That should be catogorized as a spam. So is anyone willing to help out on how to unlock this 8700r Rogers blackberry? Or any tips on where to get it unlocked?

That is not spam, it is simply dishonest. If that has happened to you, you should report the seller and/or make sure you give the seller the proper feedback reflecting such.

I just downgraded as well.. I tried installing 4.2 twice and both times my trackwheel didn't work.. downgraded back to 4.1 without any problems..
