Hello,
What, if any, are the advantages to going BES Hosting? I am looking for: faster internet, quicker email delivery, and using the blackberry as a modem, without going through Cingular's hoops.

http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?p=34233 gives some explanation in its glossary. I'd say check the Hosted BES FAQ but the link seems to be dead.

Better email integration, wireless sync, and MDS are some of the bigger items. With a corporate BES (and if allowed by IT policy) you gain intranet access.

Here are the advantages I've come up wih after using the service.

1. The use of the MDS proxy.
2. Faster internet browsing.
3. The ability to use third party applications which rely on data.
4. Wireless synchroniztion of calendar, contacts, tasks and notes.
5. Outlook web access (access your Outlook from any computer anywhere.)
6. Ability to use folders within Outlook on your Blackberry.
7. Free upgrade to Outlook 2003.
8. Free e-mail account.
9. No need for desktop redirector
10. Triple DES encryption technology.
11. Ability to specify "from" e-mail address on outgoing messages.
12. Real live technical support only a phone call or e-mail away.
13. Immediate e-mail delivery.

I have no idea what the difference is between the two. I am buying my husband the BB 8700 for his personal use. Can I go BES that way? Or do you have to only go BES when you use it for business use? And how decides which way you go? Cingular?

You decide if you want to use BIS or BES.

The major factor between deciding between the two is cost. Cingular gives you access to the BIS for free when you use a Blackberry with one of their plans.

BES hosting is done by third party companies who charge a fee (on top of your Cingular voice and Blackberry plans.)

Ok, so I got setup with ExchangeMyMail, and I have a question... When sending email from my BB should I select Desktop or WebClient. If I choose desktop, does it only send the email when I syncronize to my Outlook? or does it send immediately?

Mine is set up to send using Desktop and it sends immediately.

Specifically, with hosted BES, can I get categories in my calendar appointments? And will unfinished tasks roll from their original due dates to today until they are marked complete?

Unfortunately the BB does not support categories for the calendar. Overdue tasks do appear on the task list. They're displayed in bold.

The beauty of the calendar feature with BES is the wireless synchroniztion part of it. It elimates the need for a cable. For example, you're on the road and your assistaint adds an appointment to your calendar. Bam, it's shows up on your Blackberry.

Okay, I am still trying to get the grasp of BIS and BES.

I am going to get my 8700c from Cingular pretty soon. I am buying it as a personal user, but will be using it in my businesses and such.

Which should I choose?

I see that you pay extra for BES, what makes you have to pay extra?

I am going to install a few programs like an AIM messenger and such, is that something I have to have BES for?

Is getting BES just ASKING for major fees? I am uber confused about this. Ha.

BES hosting from www.exchangemymail.com will cost you $20 per month.

As for which you should choose, you should look at the benefits of Exchange hosting and see if it would help you.

Most third party apps require the use of wap. Cingular charges for this per kb. If you're on BES you do not get charged (one of the benefits.)

I love having a hosted Exchange service. MailStreet has given me unparalleled customer service. They were very patient with me when I crossed over to the darkside and tried a Treo 700w for a few days and then switched back to a BlackBerry. It, too, is in the $20/month range.

Automatic synching of mail, contacts, and calendar has been well worth the extra money.

Wow. okay, that all sounds so great. I am still very confused about it though. I will research the site, and may need to find someone who I can talk to on the phone and figure out if this is what I need/want

So this is something I would tell Cingular I was wanting (BES) and then go through an external company to get?

Kind of like a web hosting service? I own the domain (the blackberry) and need to find a service that allows me to use it to it's fullest? (like web hosting?)

No, Cingular has nothing to do with Exchange Hosting.
