I COULD BE WRONG, but I believe SMS is used to notify the device that there is email waiting at which point the device looks to see what new email has come in. This is for BES, but may also be true for BIS depending on the version being run and the email system (like Yahoo).

If this IS true, you probably can't disable SMS via IT Policy, and might kill the device if you do!

This is why the BlackBerry is more cost efficient in other countries. The other big mobile email systems (Good and Active Sync) require an Always On connection which can rack up big bucks very fast! BB only communicates when it needs to.

That is wrong, the whole point of BlacKBerry is that the device polls the Inbox to see if there is a message waiting, rather than the inbox telling the device that there is mail there.

I've disabled SMS in the past and the device has worked fine, but I need to stop incomming messages.

Disabling SMS via IT policy does not stop the device from receiving SMS messages. It only disables the sending of SMS messages from the device.

I think you should be able to have your carrier disallow incoming SMS, but I've never done it myself.

You can disable via IT policy but this actually only blocks the users from sending SMS - they can still receive. We had a lot of issues with spam for some key users, and the only effective way to block SMS completely is to get the service provider to do it at the network end.

If all of your users have 4.2 handhelds, then you can apply set the firewall on the devices to block SMSes by IT policy. If not all do, then you need to talk to your carrier - which is probably a good idea anyway if you're sure that you don't ever want users receiving SMSes.
