Lightbulb Interesting Home Shortcut Keys

Please Login to Remove!

I'm sure that this info can be found either on BBForums or in the manual but I figured it might be helpful to some to either keep a list of these keys for each BB type. I figured I'd setup the 8820 list.

Note: These keys can only be used by turning off "Dial from Home Screen" under Phone->Options->General Options. To use them, simply get to your home screen and TAP the button (don't hold it down or it will dial speed dial).

Q -> Enterprise messenger (not Blackberry messenger, it's the one that works with Sametime, etc)
W -> Web browser (for me it's the AT&T WAP Browser)
R -> Alarm Settings (handy when you need to turn it off real quick)
T -> Task List (self explanatory)
U -> Calculator
O -> Options menu (I find I use this one quite a bit)
A -> Address book
S -> Search your BB
D -> Memo pad (I believe it's D for documents)
F -> Profiles (Not sure if it's F for Fone Profiles or what. )
H -> Blackberry Help (we can all use it sometimes)
K -> Keyboard lock (I prefer the mute method myself)
L -> Calendar
C -> Compose new SMS text message
V -> Go to your saved messages
B -> Blackberry Browser Bookmarks (Definitly deserves to be the letter B)
N -> Blackberry Messenger contact list
M -> Messages (Default view)

Hope that helped you along. Maybe someone else can do the same for the 8830, the Pearl, etc. Or BB can always send me a few of these and I can run through them for them .

Cheers!

Also posted here in the FAQ...
Home Screen Shortcuts - BlackBerryFAQ.com

All full qwerty BB have the same homescreen shortcuts. The FAQ list link I posted has a few additional.

It is always good to brush up on these, so thanks.

I knew they were listed somewhere else. I just couldn't remember where.

My sprint 8830 differs slightly from your 8820:

B -> Blackberry Browser (not the bookmarks)
W -> Nothing
C-> Compose email (not SMS)

Otherwise, they're a match.

And looking at the FAQ, these diffs make sense.

My Verizon 8830 shares these differences; I wanted to note that on my model, and perhaps yours, C is for Compose, but it will compose either e-mail or SMS. This is contact-specific, and based on the most recently used message type for each contact. For example, when I hit C and select my boss' contact link, it defaults to SMS, because I always SMS her, never email. When I hit C and select my father's contact link, it defaults to e-mail, as this is the message type I use for him. I'm 99% sure that it uses the most recently used message type, and not the most commonly used type for each contact.

What a mouthful.

Also, P--> Phone (which is actually more easily accessed by pressing the Send key...)

I wish RIM would allow user-programmable hot keys for the unused keys. I had ideaMatrix and todoMatrix for a trial period and used the I and X keys, but after deactivation, they are back to nonfunctional. I use all of the characters as speed dial keys! Man, I must be really bored to go on and on here...

Aha! I didn't know that. Now I can use the left Convenience key for something else, like Viigo.

As a newcomer to the BB platform, there are some things that I find utterly baffling, and this is one of them. Why *wouldn't* hot keys be configurable by the user? What possible reason could there be for restricting this?

Dtdt,
I believe you're right. Good catch because this key just became even more helpful to me.

No additional information here, just a comment that for me, shortcut keys M, B, N, F and O , are ones that I find myself using many times each day.

Default Turn off "Dial from Home Screen" on a Pearl?

Does anyone know if this is possible in order to use the one letter codes mentioned instead? I switched to a Pearl from a Curve (love the small form factor) and used the one letter codes alot.

Thanks in advance and sorry if this has been covered already.
