Default So is it worth an upgrade from an 8130?

What, in your opinion, make this an essential upgrade from other BBs?

Or is it all smoke and mirrors, and basically it's a Blackberry with a shiny new suit

QWERTY keyboard.
Best screen ever on a BB.
More internal memory than any other BB in history.
Support for bigger memory cards.
WiFi.
GSM.

Is the QWERTY keyboard better than the 8130?
Is it faster overall?
Is the browser useable? Better than Opera?
Can it connect to WPA2 wifi A/Ps
Is the wifi reception good?
3g saps battery life. Does it automaticlly turn off?
Has the media player improved? e.g. Can you precisly select a point to start playing from? Can it play files suitable for PC, by re-scaling down.

Anyone have a view on these points?

Keyboard styles is personal preference, I personally like the QWERTY better than SureType.

It is a fast machine, I cannot however speak for the overall performance, my BB was only a 8100.

I find the browser usable

Security Types available for Wi-Fi:
  • WEP
  • Pre-Shared Key (PSK)
  • PEAP
  • LEAP
  • EAP-TLS
  • EAP-FAST
  • EAP-TTLS
  • EAP-SIM

Wi-Fi reception is very good I find.

Does what automatically turn off, the 3G or the device? I still find after a day my battery is only down to 40% - 60%.

I have not really tried the media player.

Might clear any future confusion if your profile reflected the fact that you have the 8130 and not the 8310 as it indicates.

Default More questions

Can the 3g radio be powered off to save battery like the iphoney?

Do all the standard shortcut keys still work like the older BB's ?

Is the screen physically wider ?

Is the speaker phone and audio improved ??

Thanks....

You can turn off 3G in Options > Mobile Network and selecting 2G in Network Mode.

All the shortcut keys do work, including my favotiet: press # to toggle into vibrate profile from the home screen.

The screen is the same dimension, I believe, as the 8800 series screens. The resolution of the Bold is significantly improved, however.

My speaker is loud and clear. No issues at all, no vibration noise, no interferance, etc.

@joec - I am a recent convert from an 8310 to a Bold. I had an 8700 before that, and this is by far the best Berry I have had. Just about everything on the Bold is an improvement over the 8310 with one exception, size. This made little difference to me, so I have never thought twice about it. For some, size of the device is very important.

Up until now I have not found a single thing that I would rate the 8310 higher.

As for getting one, watch the Buy/Sell/Trade section, or eBay. You will have to pay the full asking price since there is no carrier/contract price break.
