Verizon - Do you NEED a data plan?
Please Login to Remove!
In order to have a Blackberry on verizon - Do you need to have a data plan? If no, how much does it cost? $30 or so (like their other PDAs?)?

You dont "need" a data plan, but if you don't have on, then you will only be able to use it for phone calls and text messaging.
no email, no internet, no data!

That is incorrect. With Verizon, you have a data plan, or you don't have a BB. One or the other. Verizon will not allow any BB on their network without the data plan. End of story, no getting around it, no short cuts, no free wap, etc. Data plan on all BB's on Verizon.

Correct, Verizon is the only U.S. carrier that requires you to have a data plan.

I believe you have to have a Data Plan with AT&T as well. I just got a BB recently and the Data Plan was all I could choose.

Personally, I don't know why you'd want to have a BB WITHOUT a data plan... That's like getting a Corvette with a 4-cylinder engine. Silly!

That is true. It seems like these phones were made for email, and the internet. Why would you not want that?

No, AT&T does not require you to have a data plan provisioned on your account.

It's the Mother.
She firmly believes that Data Plans are the end of the world and make your phone bill go up $600. Like when I got my Moto q9m, she (again) firmly believed that I had to pay $50 a month JUST to have the phone. The salesman laughed in her face and said, "There is no such charge."
But, the chances of getting her ass back to the Verizon store to have a salesman explain the Data Plan to her are.. slim to none.
My dad is fine with it. In fact, quote on quote - "That's it? $30? That's.. nothing." He even fought with my mom over it a few times.
Hell, I even offered to pay for it myself. But, there, too - My mom firmly believes that my money can go to better places. Yeah. My $600 a month is going to afford my tuition at NYU! The money either goes to a Data Plan, or a half of shirt, a taxi ride, starbucks, or sushi. Pick your choice, mother!
Long story short - I have money to spend. I want a new phone. I am not 18. And, it'd be a cold day in hell before I get a Data Plan. :D

Oh, I know. I haven't even sent a picture message since.. May. Browse the internet? Never have I on a phone. Ever.
Hell. The Q9m is a "media" phone. I can't even access half the media stuff because I don't have a plan. Paid $450 for a phone that.. barely ****ing works.
-x-
How old do you need to be to have a plan on T-mobile?
I know that Verizon requires you to be 18. (Load of bullshit, by the way)

Have your dad throw it on there, and just pay him. Don't tell your mom, just leave her out of the loop on this one.

I suppose if you had a WiFi model you could use only that. But then you don't get the email feature, which kind of defeats the purpose.

A friend of mine has a Pearl with no data plan. Not on Verizon, of course. He has no desire to spend an extra $30/month plus tax to be able to send/receive email and surf the web from his phone. But, he still can talk on the phone, send texts and MMS, use the camera, use the media player and play games. For that matter, he could also still use it to sync his Contacts, Calendar, and Tasks with his desktop. But his biggest reason is that, in his opinion, it is one of the best cell PHONES he's ever had. Great reception, great voice clarity.
A BlackBerry is still a great, useful tool without having Internet access.

It's also the law. Have to be at least 18 years old to sign any kind of binding contract.
The reason why Verizon makes you have a data plan is because the Verizon network phones constantly communicate with their servers thus using data. I spoke to a Verizon Rep and he said people had bills that were in the thousands because of the lack of the data plan and the per MB charge. Gets real expensive real quick.

This is yet another tired old analogy like the ones that people always post on BB forum sites.
Plenty of people have their reasons for not wanting a data plan whether you get it or not. Granted, it might be a moot point depending on their carrier...
