Default streaming videos via you tube -- poor quality

Please Login to Remove!

Today i was at the apple store with my storm and did a side by side comparision of video streaming quality from youtube.com
I took the same exact video and played them together on each device and found the iphone had a much higher clarity where the storm was very grainy! Is it the brower itself that is pulling the quality down or does iphone have some special hook-up with youtube.com because of its software integration?

bottom line, how do i get my storm to be able to play sharper quality videos from youtube? Atleast to iphone quality...

Youtube in safari looked the same as it does in the bb browser, both are very poor. Hopefully an app gets released soon

are you sure you are comparing 3g iphone vs storm and not the 1st version of iphone? because it is a big differance in quality.

Default Same quality

I went to an Apple store & 2 AT&T stores and made sure their iPhones were running on 3G as opposed to WiFi. I then accessed the same Youtube videos (4 different ones) on both the Storm & the iPhone and got the same poor quality.

It makes the most sense to me that the quality of the video is controlled by youtube and not the device.

Ok just went on my cousins iphone from my home and viewed a music video... and went to same exact video and played it on my storm. quality was much better on the iphone! Are you guys comparing same videos? Some people upload poor quality vids! you have to compare apples to apples.

only thing i can think of is that maybe the iphone has a faster connection where you are located and youtube checks connection speed, then sends video at a quality level best suited for that speed. when i compared mp4 play back quality, side by side, storm looked the same if not slightly better. the only other thing i could think of to explain it is that apple has an exclusive deal with youtube to get better quality streaming. regaurdless, its not the difference in the devices, but rather the data getting sent.

The question is, are the iPhones you've tried connecting via WiFi or via the 3G network?

If they're connecting via WiFi, they might be using the higher bandwidth to pull a higher quality stream.

both devices are on 3g network. The storm has 4 bars and the iphone has 3 bars...
playing same video, iphone pulls higher quality. Its very noticable by both me and my cousin. I notice my storm pulls the youtube.com mobile website with the grey backround and the iphone pulls some special youtube.com interface.

when your downloading at 50k/s + you can expect videos to stream flawless. You obviously havn't seen it yet. The japanese have been doing it for several years now..

I watched one video... I don't know which one you watched, but mine wasn't bad... it isn't Hi-Def by any stretch, but was not bad quality at all, and no hiccups during the stream.

to be fair, Apple is on their 3rd Generation of the iPhone, this is the first Storm... I'll wait for some software releases... it's my price to pay as an early adopter.

My biggest beef w/ the phone is the camera so far - and the occaisional lockup/crash.

I wasn't all that impressed by the "free" Office software which requires a $70 purchase to actually be useful... (I haven't tried using a loaded document yet, but you can't create docs unless you pay the fee... and there are some features only available with the premium version.)

sorry -- accidentally hit 'reply' on last post too soon.

iPhone plays the uTUBE videos using a non-Flash technology while BB seems to use Flash. Perhaps that's why they are different.

Again, iPhone cannot play Flash.

The youtube quality on the iphone is a lot better than the storm. If you cant see this, get glasses/contacts/laser surgery.

anybody have a solutions for this? Or what can be fixed in the future to allow us comparable quality? Good to see somebody agree's with my accusations of the storm. Apple seems to always be on top of the game when it comes to software applications and graphic interface.

Once again, as someone above stated, the storm is in its FIRST generation, while you are comparing it to the iphone, which has been out for 2 years and has been updated and refined during that time. There are definitely bugs and quirks with the Storm and it is definitely not perfect, but what do you expect from the first generation of any product?
