though mostly to major cities, is GSM going to be much worse, worse, or the same re: cell phone coverage vs. CDMA? Thanks for your opinions.

Nothing beats Verizon for USA coverage. It isn't much worse, esp if you travel to major cities but frequently I have to venture into the burbs of a major city area and the signal will suffer. Verizon's coverage is as reliable as it gets but you have to get what I consider a crappy BB.
