Using Blackberry as a modem outside of your local service

Hi guys,
I recently had to leave the country unexpectedly. I had my blackberry and laptop with me but there were no wireless access points where I was and I was hoping to utilize the blackberry as a modem.
I have set it up to be used as a modem and have tested and used it before. However, I've always used it in a jurisdiction where Rogers (my service provider) exists. Specifically, I was in the Carribean and I was not able to use the blackberry as a modem. Is there something that I needed to change? Can someone let me know what settings need to change when you leave the country (i.e. roaming)? Or is it not even possible?
It's possible. But you'll note the differences are in the special modem string in the modem setup and in the login name and password.
So you have to set up using the local provider's settings because that's the network you have to login to.
When I had to do this I googled APN and the name of the local service provider and modem or something like that. Luckily someone had already figured out all the settings so I just copied that. Hopefully someone in the Carribean has done the work for you.
Unless you have a really good international data plan, you will get raped for the charges. As far as I know, Rogers will charge you $ 0.05 per KB. That will add up really fast. They are the worst bunch of thieves I have ever dealt with on international roaming.
I once got charged $55 to navigate to an address in Paris using the GPS and bills of $1- 2K are common with no modem. With a modem, sky's the limit.
